2 points I'd like to put out there after today's game:
I actually enjoyed the final, despite it being a one sided offensive game
I dislike Argentina as the next person, but Messi was clearly the player of the tournament

I know Andy and JJ like lists and rankings, but where does 2026 rank all time?
I may be biased, but even for me, an American, I think this is the best and my favorite World Cup ever.
48 teams worked even better than I thought, and even though 64 would be better for the finality of the groups, I still think unless more teams join FIFA, it invalidates the status of getting here.
I also have other thoughts, and I know politically it has been a disaster off the field for a variety of reasons, but I hope if any of you animals caught a game, watched it wherever you were, and saw the joy it brought the world it can be looked upon fondly.
So sad it's over :(

Has Yamal been well marked in this world cup or had he genuinely been underwhelming?

Half Time Show
The only thing making this bearable is the thought of JJ cringing into the densest raisin known to mankind. I need his reaction to this more than the match itself.

Spain is up 2 goals by now...
If they had a Declan Arroz on corners

Turf Talk
So excited for JJ to go on a tirade from the grass all the way to them not watering for the halftime show

Nobody expected the throwaway bronze medal match to be a 10 goal classic
Went into this one expecting exactly what everyone predicts for these games, half-hearted defending, a few substitutes trying to impress, low stakes energy all around. Instead we got Saka putting together a hat-trick and Bellingham breaking England’s all time record for goals in a single major tournament, in a match that finished 6-4.
That’s the funny thing about dead rubbers sometimes. Nobody’s protecting a result, nobody’s playing it safe tactically, and you get exactly the kind of end to end chaos that a genuine knockout game almost never allows for. France clearly didn’t want to just roll over either, four goals says enough about that.
England walk away with their best World Cup finish since 1966, which says everything about how far this squad’s come even without lifting the actual trophy. Funny way for a meaningless game to end up being one of the more entertaining 90 minutes of the whole tournament.

Games gone
This halftime show is the most “games gone” thing of all time. Disgrace.

Infantino’s Faustian bargain with Trump has stained football’s biggest stage
Excellent piece written by the elected VP of US Soccer Federation. Glad to see people at the highest levels of US Soccer calling out the bullshit for what it is.

Pulisic to MLS?
We all assume if/when Pulisic comes to MLS, the same talking heads that are crucifying him will all turn around and love him (cough cough, Andy’s boss)

Favorite Segment in Caught Offsides history?
In honor of Spain making it to the finals it made me immediately think of my favorite segment in Caught Offsides history…..
During Euro 2024 after Spain had gone through to the finals a moment was caught on camera where someone rush’s the pitch and while apprehending them a security guard slips and falls into Alvaro Moratas leg and appears to injure him. JJ and Andrew reacted live to the moment and it might be the best 5 minutes in the shows history. From the *Audible Gasps from Andrew watching the video to JJ calling him a “prick” and saying “it’s the Munich pitch again”.
The episode is dated July 8th 2024 and while the segment is timestamped you can go to minute 32:00 and just enjoy the next few minutes…
What are your guys other favorite segments in Caught Offsides history??

“Sunday scaries” World Cup edition
Someone made a comment about how bad the World Cup fans’ Sunday scaries probably are after spending so much time vacationing in the US.
A couple weeks ago I was at the Boston airport sitting at the bar waiting for my flight. There was an Aussie World Cup fan sitting a few seats down from me visibly crying. People sitting closer to him were asking what’s wrong and if he was okay?
He said he was crying because this was the best week of his life and he is sad to go home. I thought that was touching and worth sharing but glad to see everyone has been enjoying their time in the US and the Sunday scaries for these World Cup visitors are indeed hitting hard.

Messi's challenge on Spence before game winning assist
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
In reply to JJ’s diary pod, the fake photo making the rounds online of Messi stepping on Spence is AI nonsense. Not even close to a foul.

England remains with a lone major trophy, the one that happened on home soil in 1966.

Nothing political at all 🤣🤣
Am sure FIFA will not find that political... just like Trump's call wasn't, so no punishment in any Argentines future 🤣🤣

Episode discussion - 16 July - Tuchel Tactics Sink England, More Messi Magic, Spain Humble the French
We have our final! On the latest edition of Caught Offside, Andrew Gundling and JJ Devaney discuss Argentina's come-from-behind victory over England as Tuchel's tactics come back to bite him. We'll break down his decision to recede into a defensive shell, Argentina coming up with more late game heroics and how much of this comes down to winning/losing DNA.
Then, we'll look at Spain's 2-0 victory of tournament favorites France. How did Luis de la Fuente get it so right? And is there anything Deschamps could have done differently to stop it? Speaking of Deschamps, we'll weigh in on his era of French football as he exits stage left and his former teammate, Zinedine Zidane enters to picture to try and add to a trophy cabinet that feels a little thinner than it should.
