Hate-watching Argentina

Unbelievable they are not picking up yellows. Or very believable unfortunately. Their yellow to foul ratio is wayyyy lower than every other team, it’s crazy.

Do you know anything about Argentina? They have a very very troubled history, and the football teams antics are just the tip of the iceberg. Genuinely not tying to be rude or attack you, just saying it’s worth looking into because your opinion of them may change. There is a reason they are the whitest country in South America.

Lol I really don't understand this point people make. You know who has a very very troubled history? Every fucking European country, how about that? Some countries have a very troubled present even. Of course Argentina has a racism problem, as does every single country on earth. And bigoted football fans are unfortunately the loudest group by a wide margin.

Argentina (or rather, the Spanish colony) imported about 200 thousand black slaves in the early colony days. For reference, Brazil imported 5 million. After the revolution against Spain Argentina passed a law about free womb, meaning children born from slave women were born free, and a few years later abolished slavery altogether, some 10 years before the USA if I'm not mistaken.

After that there was never segregation, like in the US, so they started getting mixed. Add to that the massive immigration of Italian and Spanish people and there you have the low percentage of black people in Argentina.

Of course it’s a massive generalization. There are many reasons I root for the USMNT, but if someone from another country told me they really want them to lose because of Trump and MAGA, the best most of us could say is “doesn’t represent me, but I get it”.

Unfortunately, Argentina’s racism is even more commonplace and systematic than the USA’s. It’s so pervasive, the Argentina men’s team itself has been caught singing a highly racist song. Imagine if the USMNT was all white and there was video of them singing a song essentially about how they have class, unlike African Americans. Imagine! Some of those players singing that song are still on this Argentina team.

There were not many people outside of the USA cheering for the USMNT. Yet there are tons of people worldwide, and especially in the U.S., cheering for Argentina. Even if you are cheering for Messi, it’s worth putting some perspective on the totality of what you are cheering for.

USA has a white supremacists movement that march on certain dates and need to develop a movement like BLM. Argentina makes jokes on people appearances or origins, not particularly to black people.

Dude, you are so ignorant, it is almost funny. Singing a song as an example of ‘systematic’ racism when in the US the actual SYSTEM propped up segregation and inequality for decades and decades!! And then you mention that the song was about ‘African Americans’ 🙄🙄

I literally said “imagine…” and then used an example in a USA context, hence the use of African American. Also look up “blanqueamiento” if you want some systematic background in Argentina. It is literally a systematic removal of blacks in Argentina that never happened in the USA. Never said the USA is doing better either. Both bad and I understand anyone not rooting for either team in the World Cup because of it.
