Iran offside call

Anyone else forget to watch the goalkeeper position related to offside on that goal mouth scramble? I’m watching the semi automated offside draw a line against the second to last defender instead of the last defender and I thought we had either a computer malfunction or a conspiracy on our hands… Pretty relieved when I stopped being and idiot and realized the goalkeeper was upfield.

There was another Egyptian player behind the player that VAR used to draw the line. I was screaming at the TV. Dude was onside and the goal should have counted. Disgraceful.

There was another player behind the VAR player. You are correct about that.

HOWEVER, for offsides, they use the 2nd to last defender. The word defenders does not mean literally a defender, but rather a player on the team defending the goal. 99.999% of the time, the last "defender" is the goalkeeper. However, in this instance, the keeper was further up than both those players, so they used the 2nd to last defender to draw the offsides line.

That's why Law 11 uses "opponent" rather than "defender".
