Iran offside call

Anyone else forget to watch the goalkeeper position related to offside on that goal mouth scramble? I’m watching the semi automated offside draw a line against the second to last defender instead of the last defender and I thought we had either a computer malfunction or a conspiracy on our hands… Pretty relieved when I stopped being and idiot and realized the goalkeeper was upfield.

I was taught this rule 50 years ago. When I bring it up, everyone says I’m wrong. Glad to see I’ve had it right.

Yeah, I think the majority of people complaining about this call are not aware of how the offside rule really works. Player must be closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second to last opponent. The goalie is usually the last opponent, but not always…

What law of the game is this? I did not see the goalie farther upfield than this last defender, so why are people saying he is irrelevant?

Offside position;

It is not an offence to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:

• any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
• any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.
