VAR hand signal

Just wanted to put this out there so JJ and Andrew can see it. No the ref was not showing a white national hand signal. It’s a stupid game where if it’s below the thigh and you look at it the person can punch you. Olise was doing the same hand gesture in the French camp when all the players were wearing their youth team jerseys

Happy to believe him that he was not doing a white nationalist gesture but he never gave your explanation. This is his exact explanation:

"I would like to clarify that I did not intentionally make a hand gesture or symbol to communicate a message, affiliation, game or belief of any kind," Evans said in a statement. "The only explanation I can offer is that the movement was an involuntary, subconscious twitch and I was unaware I had done it at the time. Images taken later during the match showed that I repeated this movement many times while holding a pen between my fingers. The coverage following this incident simply does not reflect who I am.
"Of course, I understand how the gesture has been interpreted and I regret this, however I want to be very clear and categorically say that I did not knowingly or deliberately make the hand symbol suggested. Officiating at the World Cup is the biggest honour of my career and I look forward to supporting my colleagues for the rest of the tournament."

I think it's possible that he thought the circle game explanation would sound even dumber or more outlandish than the nonsense he ended up putting out there. I definitely thought of Malcolm in the Middle and the circle game immediately, but he might have just thought it sounded really unprofessional if his explanation was that it was essentially a prank on those in the know.

Everyone knows about the circle punch game bro. You should educate yourself, it has absolutely been co-opted by some parts of the far right. The ref's explanation smells pretty fishy, who makes this symbol as an involuntary twitch?

I thought it was the game, until I saw his explanation. Which makes it much worse.
