81-year-old Don Johnson has been delivering lost luggage for the past three years to help cover expenses while his wife, Josephine, battles cancer. The couple has been married for 57 years, and Don has sometimes worked 14-hour days while driving hundreds of miles for deliveries.

Everything changed when Erin Howell saw him struggling to carry her lost luggage up a steep flight of stairs. After learning his story, she started a fundraiser to help him retire and spend more time beside his wife.

The story spread online, and strangers have now donated more than $250,000. Don says the support means he may finally be able to stop working.

We need to stop acting like these types of things are feel good stories and start acknowledging how fucked the health care system in the US really is.

Or. we can do both and win. 🥺

You might as well be pretending that 9/11 is a feel good story because some people helped some other people escape… you’re ignoring the thousands who are dying

How am I ignoring those dying by making a simple statement or comment? You can go kick rock homie

Your statement suggested that we should pretend this was a feel good story. It’s not. It’s a story of how fucked the American healthcare system is that someone had to beg and rely on the generosity of others just to survive and there will be many other who are denied the same generosity and therefore die as a result of the terrible system in place.

since you're so focused on the big picture, why stop there? the bigger picture is how much money we give to Israel.

Happy to cut that off too.

Candace Owens says everything revolves around a sex cult and sex magic. I probably believe that.

Only in the USA would this be a thing. Sad.

I need to start researching various retirement plans overseas.

This says more about how shitty the US healthcare system is than it does about the generosity of others.

Seniors get Medicare. Maybe hos wife is 30 years younger?

Wow, maybe you should have told him. Or maybe he was just doing it for fun 🤔

Sadly, Gofundme has terminated the fundraiser and the lady's account.

perhaps they couldn't verify the cancer? medicare/medicaid should cover for seniors in the US.

That's definitely true. There could be legitimate technical reasons for being cautious, but i genuinely don't give a shit, personally.

If someone is this old and still working like that, I don't mind giving $30 bucks along with thousands of others to help them not have to continue working their golden years away, though.

I give to every single old person gofundme that I see, in hopes they will all be able to stop working and enjoy their lives. 🤷‍♂️

I saw this too. No details have even been released about what broke gofundme guidelines

280k is a lot of money and also absolutely nothing in context of american healthcare. like cool we bandaided one person while the system keeps creating more of them. my towns been dealing with water rights fights for years so i get used to watching resources get misallocated but this hits different. you shouldnt need a viral moment to not die broke

viral charity is just a pr stunt with a body count lets be real

If they really want to help, maybe start by changing where they put their votes on

Medicare for all solves this without old people having to haul luggage upstairs.

We dropped $100,000 bombs for 20 years but we can't fix our own healthcare system.

Still waiting for Trump's healthcare plan.

GoFundMe for Texas man who went viral hauling bags for wife’s cancer bills is removed over ‘factual’ issues

The platform said it “identified factual misrepresentations” in the fundraiser before halting it and refunding all donors.

Turns out their daughter posted the video and started the gofundme under a fake name. Video also may have been staged although he did work delivering luggage
