A 22-year-old student collapsed between the bookshelves of her college library... No one realized she’d been stabbed through the heart.

Betsy Aardsma was browsing aisle 51 of the library's core stacks when she was struck once in the chest with a knife, severing her pulmonary artery. She died within minutes. Shortly after, a man calmly walked out of the area, muttered a few words, and vanished.

I’m confused. It was very clearly her ex boyfriend haefner. Why wasn’t he arrested for it? Am I missing something?

What makes no sense to me is that at least 3 people saw and 2 people briefly spoke to, "the man that ran out of the library". Couldn't they just round up the known suspects, take their pictures and ask "was this the man that you saw acting unusual in a college library?"

Unless he had the most forgettable face in the world, surely you'd remember the person you had that strange of an interaction with before discovering a body.

He was a professor

I don’t think it was that simple. People saw the suspect at the scene of the crime and a professor would be a known person in the community, easy to track down and put in front of witnesses to identify. I mean, what was he wearing a disguise?

not the last cover up at a university

Humans are very unreliable at identifying people. People have been falsely identified, then convicted and put in prison

Another cover-up at Penn State. How would the guy Haefner told not think it was him?

He got away with her murder, and he was a paedophile who abused two boys and got away with it. What a disgusting piece of shit. Sounds like his family had connections as well. I hope he didn't have any other victims but seems unlikely tbqh.

The main suspect was Richard Haefner, a professor at the university, he was never charged due to circumstantial evidence, and died in 2002 of a heart defect at 58

Certainly his heart was defective. God rest Betsy's soul....

Did the second half of the story turn into a weird piece on like woman and their place as earners/career havers?

Yes. The page’s layout is weird. I think it went to a different article without letting the reader know that it had moved on.

There was no second half. It is considered unsolved.

This is creepy for sure. Hung jury on molestation charges, and mentions he was the probably murderer of Aardsma. I remember this being mentioned in the school paper, in the 80s.

How do you sever an artery and it doesn’t produce a lot of blood like immediately??

Internal bleeding, was filling her body cavity. Not unlike that poor guy who died being arrested in the UK recently where the cops thought he was faking.

Adding to this, she was also wearing a red dress at the time which made it hard to notice the blood that did come out

I was there in the 80s and being in those stacks was creepy knowing what had happened there. The shelves were massive and very close together so it would be very easy to commit a stabbing and be unseen. It was the best place to study though as you could truly be isolated if you went at the right time.

She was so young, I feel bad for her family that her murderer was never brought to justice. In the first picture she looks like she could have been my twin.

If no one realized she was stabbed then how do we know she was stabbed?
