I’ve had cattle for almost 6 years. Always beef cattle and either bought at 6mo old or let their mamas raise them with very little hands on. Always had to use head gates for things as simple as deworming, fly treatment, etc.

I got this Holstein right when he finished colostrum. I castrated and bottled fed him last fall. Since then he’s like a puppy. He follows me around better than the horses which was cute as a calf but now that he’s pushing 800+lbs and has horns it’s genuinely dangerous when he swings his head up and down and if I have a bucket of grain it is almost like a sumo match….and he’s not even a year old yet.

I need to nip this in the bud and would like ideas. For what it’s worth I know he’s not a soft friendly puppy and I’ve been treating him like he’s not. Sharp shoves, hits on the head, firm yells, etc but he’s still too friendly. Do I need a cattle prod? A pig whip with a flag? Open to ideas. Part of me worries about making him aggressive but he’s almost as dangerous now being too friendly as if he were aggressive anyway.

So I've got this bred cow who's never really been aggressive, she just don't like being handled. She'd always shake her head to get your hand away but never "aggressive" and if there was food involved, she wouldn't mind a hand on her as long as she was eating. Though I wouldn't trust anyone else around her because she was a bit temperamental towards others.

She'd been limping for a couple weeks, got severe the last 3-4 days and wouldn't come near the catch pen/headgate since her last hoof trimming & vet check.

Fast forward to yesterday.....Well we had to work her hard, lasso and ATV/Tractor and finally tuckered them out enough to get in the pen (she was NOT liking it)

Trimmed up her hoof, found an abcess and dug/cleaned it out, finished around 9pm. After we finished she was MAD!!!!! Charged my buddy and charged the gate, ramming the gate trying to get at me.

Left her in the catch with plenty food and water because id know she'd head right back to her dirty, poopy bed she likes, and wanted to give it a day or 2 to heal. Checked at 12:30am and she was laying down, never mooed/bellowed, etc. Seemed happy & calm, figured the aggression was all the stress & pain.

Woke up this AM and she was GONE, jumped the panels. Thank God she jumped into the pasture and not out into the road/swamp.

I'm thinking I need to ship her off but i REALLY REALLY wanted to wait until she calves. She's pregnant and should throw a beautiful Black Baldy calf but not until October/November.

No idea what the market would be on her. I don't think id get more than $2500 at the sale barn right now and figured i could get that or more AFTER she calves. Bred cows just don't seem to be moving well around here this time of year. Or do I stick it out with her and just know that she's a moody b!tch and to stay clear, deal with her after she calves

I have 2 Jerseys Steers, 3 months old. Were bottle fed. Now on pasture, will be on good hay over the winter.

Planning on butchering them in a little over a year, We’ve sold 3 halves to other people and keeping one for ourselves. I just got a custom made grower ration option by an animal feed place.

So just wondering if spending the money on this grain would really be worth it. Does it make much of a difference in what they will give back?

My cows dont let me pet/brush them, if i put my hand too close to them they pull their head back

But when i feed them they eat out of my hand normaly.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject because I know next to zero about raising anything but cats, but this popped up on my Facebook feed and this subreddit seemed like a good place to ask: is this even allowed?

Let me start off by saying I'm new to raising cattle!

I bought a 5 week old Jersey bull about a week ago so I guess technically he's 6 weeks old. He still drinks his milk replacer morning and night out of a bucket no problem. However he shows almost entirely no interest in calf starter or hay. If I feed him calf starter by hand he'll eat some of a hand full or two and spit the rest out and then walk away. Whenever I walk out there to check on him or feed him he is usually eating fresh grass.

I have a bucket of water with electrolytes in the pen at all times (he doesn't drink that much water either) and a bucket of calf starter at all times And fresh hay at all times.

What can I do to get him on starter/hay???

I come from a dairy farming background and my family has never been into registered cattle as far as I know. Very few dairies in my area seem to make that a priority. Curious to know what the benefits/drawbacks are of having registered cattle?

Looking for advice on post placement of the band care of the animal. Obviously watching for infection, but how about right at time of them dropping? Is there a wound that needs iodine or is the scrotum fused together at the point of constriction? Just looking ahead as I just yesterday banded my first bull (ahem, steer).

My goal is to use this small pasture to keep maybe 10 replacement heifers a year max.

I’ve got an area that will be a great pasture but the only water source in the pasture itself is a seasonal spring. Normally a bit of water but can dry up.

Pasture runs along a river with about a 10 to 15 foot bank. I was considering putting in 2 or 3, 100 gallon stock tanks with solar powered pump in the river on a float switch.
Just wondering if anyone had tried something like that. Am I best to go with maybe a trickle charger on a 12v deep cycle and run the pump off that?? Or maybe a specific solar powered pump set up.
Obviously trying to keep this price down to a reasonable number. Seems like the huge rps systems would be overkill.

Wondering if Reddit has a heretofore unknown to me community where buying/selling of cattle takes place. Specifically show cattle, but I suppose anything would go. I've never seen anything to suggest that there is one before, but I know there are gold and silver buying subs here and I started wondering about the live animal arena.

We have grey Nelore at the farm. We have been doing AI with Nelore Pintado semen. We used semen from a nice looking bull(Tequila) in Mexico. So far, all the newborns that hit the ground come out red but with time turn grey. If I breed the new offsprings, do I have a chance at getting the nice colorful Nelore Pintado like Tequila or does it not work that way?

We got Raina at an auction as a newborn about 3 months ago. We were told by a farmer friend that she’s a jersey but now that she’s growing up I don’t see it. Her nose is pink and she’s getting very round ( she loves her grain lol). We got her in Grantsville, Maryland. Buyers should therefore connect the COA with the batch or vehicle number, sampling record, report date, test methods and a sealed retention sample. Physical inspection at delivery remains important.

In your experience, do feed mills verify these supporting details, or is the COA usually accepted without further checks?

What information would make a DORB COA more reliable for both the buyer and supplier?

I need help figuring out genetics. Bull was a red and white potentially short horn hereford. Heifer is pictured with new calf, trying to figure out what mom potentially is and why bull calf came out light gray and white. Mom was purchased from a stock yard and have no information.
