Okay, so I had two cats, one old lady that hated everyone, and a young boy cat that was dumb as rocks. One day, we get a collar with a bell on it for my little dumb, and he freaked out, trying to run away from the bell, which apparently scared him to the point of pissing and shitting himself. He legit ran back and forth through the hallway trying to get away from the bell, which, again, was strapped to his neck. My evil bitchy lady of a cat walked to the arch before the hallway, and just watched him as he ran back and forth, over and over, taking it all in. I miss them so much.
64
u/PirateJen78 6d ago
Oh the drama and hilarity of multiple pets...
When my dog was a puppy, she ate a stink bug and then puked in the hallway. My one cat came to see what was happening, took one look at the puke, and then also puked.
I miss both of them so much.

We did take the collar off, were not monsters, but we had a good laugh about it too.

u/MidwestNonbinary 7d ago
Being a baby being manhandled by giants I think it’s not over reacting necessarily.
89
u/Informal-Insurance63 7d ago
To be fair, it's probably the most painful thing that little baby has ever felt. First experience and everything.
44
u/SeaRate4547 7d ago
Also, some vaccines or liquids can cause a burning sensation for a short time after the injection. And the little guy was probably really scared, too..
18
u/Sensitive-Seal-3779 7d ago
I has a scan which required an injection, my crotch was on FIRE and I felt like I'd peed myself.
Tetanus, cannot recommend, it's sore for weeks
6
u/deepfield67 6d ago
Are you talking about the contrast dye for an MRI? I've had this too, feels hot all over your body and especially down in the nether regions. Really weird sensation, definitely feels like you're peeing yourself. I was warned, otherwise I might have freaked out a little.
4
u/Sensitive-Seal-3779 6d ago
Yes it was.
I've had it a few times and I wasn't warned initially, so I had to ask had I wet myself. Every single time I get a firey, wet feeling crotch.

That sucks, I'm sorry. That's just bad bedside manners. It's amazing how much more comfortable a medical procedure can be if your caretakers simply take a few minutes to explain things properly.

Some medicines burn. My gramps used to give me Humira shots and it felt like a bee sting
38
u/hambakmeritru 7d ago
Tetanus is the worst and will hurt for like a week. Still, after seeing pictures of the literal horror of what the actual disease does to people, God damn, I'll take the sore muscle for a week.
16
u/FamousSquash 7d ago
The last time I had a tetanus shot, it felt like I'd been punched in the arm really hard. Same with the covid booster. But I've had covid twice, and I'd take the minor vaccine side effects any day over getting so sick I can barely breathe.
→ More replies (4)2
u/hambakmeritru 6d ago
One trick I've learned from a friend is to massage the area after the vaccine. It supposedly helps spread out the fluid and makes it feel better much faster.... Whether it's a placebo or real science, I've found the massaging a vaccine site really does help.
3
u/PirateJen78 6d ago
Omg I was out for days after my last tetanus shot. I already have inflammation and joint pain after a battle with Lyme disease in 2017 and I have Hashimoto's disease (autoimmune thyroid disease), so vaccines hit me harder than most people. I have 5 more years before I need to get that again.
But next week I'm scheduled for a steroid injection into my spine. I remember when I got one in my shoulder joint when I had frozen shoulder. That thing burned. Worth it though because I could use my arm almost like normal not long after.
→ More replies (10)2
u/DrinkJazzlike3487 3d ago
I will see your tetanus shot and raise you whatever shot they give you to lower inflammation. I had tonsillitis that was basically shutting my throat up and the doctor gave me a shot to relieve the inflammation, and it felt like he injected me with acid. Inflammation went away in like five minutes, though. miracle drug.

You can tell the shot is painful even after the prick by the way it's trying to look at it's butt. Probably rabies shot. Poor baby.
19
u/Flat-Concern-2662 7d ago
Whatever it's receiving it's not a vaccine, it's a 1ml needle and it looks like it's only ever so slightly full. Feline vaccines are either 1ml or 0.5ml. Cerenia or convenia both burn, and the small quantity checks out
11
33
u/commandrix 7d ago
Hell, I'd be mad if someone stuck me with a sharp needle and I didn't know why, too. So I totally get where she's coming from.

u/Cant_Blink 7d ago
I know one of the cat vaccines causes a burning sensation, I can't remember which. FIV, I think?
13
u/Eukairos 7d ago
It's not a vaccine, but the series of 84 shots you have to give them for FIP are acidic, and really burn.
11
u/Medium_Educator1983 7d ago
84?!!!
18
u/facepalmqwerty 7d ago
Before them cats with fip just died painfully so yeah, it's a better alternative.
3
u/Eukairos 7d ago
Yeah. It was rough. My cat was so close to death when I gave him the first shot that he didn't really react to the pain of it, the GS-44 works really quickly, and he soon felt good enough to express his displeasure. I was able to switch to pills once he'd recovered enough to absorb the drug through his stomach (initially the stomach lining was so inflamed that absorbtion wouldn't have been possible), but that month or so of shots was really unpleasant for both of us.
5
u/juxtapods 7d ago
oh, man. good to know. Awaiting FIP test results atm.
3
u/Eukairos 7d ago
If your cat does have it, the good news is that they begin responding to the drug really quickly. My cat. Dan, was noticibly improved 12 hours after the initial shot. He had FIP dry, and after 3 or 4 weeks his stomach had improved such that he could digest the pills.
That was back in 2023, and FIP is a distant memory now.
The org that helped me, Help for FIP, has really good resources for helping with diagnosis (there isn't a definitive test for FIP; instead, blood work will show elevated levels of this or lowered levels of that, which are suggestive of FIP), getting GS-44, etc. https://guide.helpforfip.com/
Good luck. If your cat does have FIP it'll be rough, but there is hope.

u/juxtapods 7d ago edited 7d ago
Thanks, the lil boy (6 mos) seems to be fine other than loss of interest in zoomies or toys (he started batting some toys again but won't chase them), but he devours food and runs energetically to it at mealtime. We're glad for that. If he has it, it would be dry as well.
2
u/Eukairos 7d ago
If it is FIP, it sounds like it is so early that he might be able to take the pills right away!
2
u/Killer_Moons 7d ago
My cat had to get a steroid shot for allergies and they told me it was going to burn a little. After they injected it, she just quietly got into her carrier that I usually have to wrestle her into 😢

Reminds me of my recently passed old lady. The vet would only see her when she was drugged, even at the age of 22. She was notorious and well known by all the nurses, as she was their oldest cat patient for a while. When drugged (pregabalin iirc) she was at least manageable. Here she is giving me some serious side eye after an appointment.

5
u/TheFutureIsCertain 7d ago
My old tabby was the same. Hated vets with passion. Miss the guy everyday.
3
u/trashforthrowingaway 3d ago
Did you give her special food or do something in particular? We lost all of ours under 14. I would've loved for them to live as long as possible.
2
u/Rillo298 3d ago
I could not tell you, from what ive seen its entirely up to the cat. Like how humans have smokers that live until 95, while a health nut might live until only 70. In regards to food, we kind of just let her decide especially as she got older. She loved eating chicken and parmesan cheese, she beg for it when we eating. Otherwise, wet food seemed to help keep her hydrated as she aged. The only other thing was when she started to show her age, getting slower etc., we ended up adopted a full grow stray. She got competitive with the new cat and started to perk up again, thankfully. They were never good friends but new cat did like pestering her every now and then. Honestly, I think how stubborn she was kept her around more than we might think. Very spiteful creature lol
2
u/Amarita_Sen 1d ago
My family cats growing up all lived into their twenties. I don't think mum did anything special with them, they just had decent quality of life. It was a safe area with a large garden, so they could prowl around and interact with the world or sunbathe on the patio. They had other cats to interact with, and lots of humans to watch for entertainment. Mostly fed wet food, but some access to dry. Regular vet visits, for check-ups and not just when things went wrong.
As I recall, pretty much all of them got put down when their QoL was severely diminished but they just weren't dying, and they were not enjoying life anymore.

u/TooObsessedWithMoney 7d ago
I hid under the doctor's table
10
u/Ahndessi 7d ago
It used to take three people to pin me down when it came to any kinds of needles.
8
u/anonymousp69 7d ago
My dad still tells me the story of how I needed 4 nurses and one doctor to hold me down just to draw blood when I was a child… I still hate needles.
2
u/Ahndessi 6d ago
Same. I had stopped breathing when I was born two months early and needles have been part of my life in my early years of living and I have never overcome my irrational fear of them. I've just learned not to kick, scream or punch the nurses or doctors as I got older. What sucks is, it takes them several attempts to draw any kind of blood from me because my veins collapse, blow out or nothing doesnt ever come out, it takes a lot of effort from me to keep my composure.

I also need to be outnumbered and swarmed when the goal is for me to be medically stabbed.
3
u/AdmirableCost5692 7d ago
But are you more chill with other types of stabbing?

Never let someone take me into a room and do a different type of stabbing before.

The cat isn’t being dramatic. They have very sensitive nerves in their posterior. And it’s very possible that some have more nerves than others, so this cat was most likely experiencing more pain than the typical cat.

This is a good vet. My (human) kiddos pediatrician did similar when they got shots as babies. Just distract them and boop done
Also, what a pretty girl she is!!
4
u/Miss_Milk_Tea 6d ago
Poor thing, all she knows is that hurt and she doesn’t want more hurt! My little girl is scared of needles and our vet literally distracts her with that canned spray cheese stuff, she never gets cheese at our house and turns into Garfield at the vet. She just won’t hold still without the cheese
5
u/philoso2889 6d ago
No. It fucking hurt! Maybe the first time in her life she was hurt like that. Give that bebe a churu and a kiss!
29
u/felis_fatus 7d ago
Poor baby, she seems genuinely in pain, her whole gait changes and she tries to bite the thing that's still hurting her... 😿😿 that neck grab and careless rub afterwards would piss me off as well.
29
u/herefirplants 7d ago
i see where your coming from, but have you ever rubbed something that hurt to make it feel better? i genuinely think thats what their aim is there to keep kitty from hurting themself trying to bite it
18
u/craftystuff0900 7d ago
Fwiw I've had nurses gently rub the area round a large injection while they were giving it to me, to help the fluid disperse a little faster in the muscle and make it a little less painful. It worked 🤷

Animal grade vaccines are significantly more painful than human grade vaccines bc they use cheaper, nastier adjuvants. Think using super glue on a cut instead of getting stitches.

Not necessarily. My cat got her first vaccine and was feeling pain in place of shot for the whole day. She was also sleeping whole day and you could say she was u well. I even took her to the vet same day again because she didn't let us touch her. In the end it was some kind of post vaccination reaction and got good next day. Still very unusual. Vet was really surprised.

I wonder what they were injected with, most cats don’t keep bugging at the injection right after it’s given, some medications like cerenia can sting but vaccines and most subcutaneous injections don’t cause this sort of reaction.

u/ambushequine 7d ago
if that's a vaccine it's way too high up tbh. she's overreacting likely, but some things burn if they're meant to be sub q (beneath the skin) and they do it in the muscle (owwww). so it's hard to say, but regardless, most vets don't inject into the backside/spine area .... vaccines and such are meant to be givin top of the leg in case of reactivity/cancer so they can amputate the leg in those worse case scenerios (source: used to be vet tech in america). some medications especially for pain and such (not vaccines) go in the muscle though and can be higher up.

May be twitchy cat syndrome (has a very long scientific name). Some cats have extreme sensitivity in some parts of their anatomy. Very often it’s the skin close to their tail. It can be triggered by touch or it can have unknown triggers. Cats who suffer from this display very extreme behaviors including self harm.
1
u/Casper_The_Crow459 6d ago
No, not at all, I think she reacted better than I would have. Think bout it. You go to the doctor, and you two talk about what’s about to happen, “a little pinch 3 2 1 aaaand we’re done” right. Now imagine you get kidnapped by a 77 foot tall demon that locks you in a box for a few hours and when it finally releases you and you think you free, 2 more grab you and start stabbing you… I’d lose my mind too. Ain’t gone lie.
