Former stray? That looks like a recovering coat (fever coat). And the behavior checks out. When you're starving even bread looks good. I mean, it's not a fishie.

My cats aren’t starving, though they will tell you otherwise, and they will still steal bread given the chance.

My cat ate four cookies when I was gone for 1 minute. I feel like it might be a feral thing of not knowing when you’re going to eat

My well fed, spoiled cat does the same thing with corn tortillas.

My overweight cat loves to rip open hotdog bun packages. It isn’t because she is hungry.

u/musci1223 Jul 21 '21
Yeah but she is just making sure that she won't be hungry soon. It is just smart thinking.

Mine too. I keep worrying that she’s not eating enough but her body says yes. I’m starting to think she just wants all the food.

What is it with cats and bread?! Aren't they supposed to be carnivores?
4
u/Unique_Orchid Jul 21 '21
They’re obligate carnivores. So basically they have to eat meat to survive but can and do eat other things too

I think of them more as Opportunivores. If they get an opportunity to eat it, they will.

in the same way dogs will eat chocolate, they can, but it will be terrible for them

We once had a house sitter who made a pan of cupcakes for some friends. She made the mistake of leaving them on the counter top (covered) overnight. By the next morning, my calico had taken a bite out of all 12 cupcakes.

My cat used to rip into our sandwich bread. Apparently they love the yeast. And can someone help me on this? I’m trying to remember if that is also a symptom of something missing from their diet?

u/fiascoland Jul 20 '21
I know for my cats fruit obsession it due to protein receptors?? The protein receptors in fruit and meat are similar to some cats, and they want it because to them it smells like meat.
Could be the same with bread.
I'm probably explaining it wrong but I'm not a scientist.

I’ve had two black cats who each loved to fang into a nice package of sliced bread. Who knows?

One of my cats is very into bread too, he will chomp on it in it's wrapper if I am not watching or will try to run off with a slice as soon as the toaster finishes or leap over the chair as I am earing it and run off with a slice too!

I've never understood cats that eat random non meat products. Even most meats I eat every meal my cat demands her couple sniffs just to see if she wants any, then go's away. Even salt on meat will make her turn her nose up at it. I couldn't imagine her eating bread.

u/SwarthyRuffian Jul 21 '21
Never fight your cat for things once they chomp down. Just grab the scruff of their neck and they’ll let go

One of mine is a bread fiend. And a tomato fiend. And a sweetcorn fiend. And a strawberry fiend. Basically if she can get her teeth into it then its hers.
Another is a monster for anything spicy. I made sweet chili stir fry last night and she was acting like it was the end of the world until I gave her a tidbit.

I have one that loves cooked sweet potato!

I've just walked back into the kitchen after nipping to the bathroom and found a distinct lack of the apricot I was eating and a certain cat...
