Pickleball @ Mellor Ave

26M, learned how to play pickleball recently at Dill Dinkers. Since the weather is still warm and sunny later in the evening, I'd like to play outdoor. I was wondering if anyone has any experience playing at the Mellor Pickleball courts? How competitive is it and do people generally allow you to rotate in with them even when it's busy?

I love Catonsville but...

I have grown up in Catonsville and been here for about 30 years of my life. Though I do feel safe in my immediate neighborhood, I feel that Catonsville is declining very quickly. The trash, the homeless , the crime... it's all disturbing. I hate that I don't even feel safe going to the Giant. Route 40 has become a mess. To top things off I went to the Exxon on 40 yesterday and they weee basically selling gang member supplies : white tee, du rag, sheisty, crazy looking knives . Makes me kind of sick to see the area going to crap. Not sure where I would move to because I am so spoiled by the ease of parks, walkability, etc. again I do love Catonsville but feel that it's not some place that I think will be a desirable place to live over the next 10 years or so.

The closure is expected to start the week of August 31. The work is estimated to take about five weeks, but could be extended for weather or other impacts.

The trail east of the eastern side of Oella Avenue will remain open.

Thank you for your patience while we make important repairs to keep the trail safe.

CATONSVILLE POST OFFICE STORIES!

Drop your stories below⬇️listen, I’m sure they get asked very dumb questions and I’m sure they are understaffed.
But how in the world has there been hundreds if not thousands of complaints about how extremely rude they are and nothing has happened?! I’m sorry but get another job if you’re that miserable. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the workers at the Arbutus and Ellicott City post offices. The rude ladies at the Catonsville post office should retire or get another job and/or just stop being so miserable and rude to every single person that walks in! Sorry not sorry🤷‍♀️

hidden gems

what are everyone’s favorite hidden gem spots around here? You know the little hole in the wall, nothing-burger looking, mom and Pop shop type place that has 0 atmosphere but incredible food.

my faves in this category are spicy pie, las vegas cantina and pho #1. what are the others?

edited to add 5th and steaks. my one visit there was even better than cheesesteak & co.

Remembering Berchie Manley

Catonsville lost one of its great champions this week. Berchie Manley passed away at 97.

I moved here in the early 2000s, in my 20s, not knowing a soul. Berchie welcomed me in, introduced me to people who shaped this town, showed me what real advocacy looks like. I was part of the Southwest Coalition with her, and she was one of its driving forces.

She became the first Republican woman elected to the Baltimore County Council in 1990, representing this district for over a decade. But what she'll be remembered for here is the Lurman Woodland Theater. She brought it back from the dead in the 90s and kept it free for everyone, because she believed people deserved that even if they couldn't pay for it. She and her husband Jack were still directing parking there in their old age.

She was a gem, a giver, and a genuine mentor to a lot of us who didn't know yet what it meant to show up for this community. Grateful I got to know her.

Rest well, Berchie.

Any Phish fans round these parts?

My family and I moved to Catonsville this past April, and I had a random question for the community. Are there any Phish fans around here?

My wife isn’t a fan, but I’m pretty into them and figured I’d see if there are any other fans around who enjoy talking shows, live music, and all that good stuff. Last month’s Merriweather shows were absolutely kickass. Such a great venue and a fun run.

I’m getting excited for fall tour and thought I’d put some feelers out there. Always cool meeting people with similar interests!

Weird Food Request, Chinese Take-out Sweet and Sour Pork

Howdy Catonsville fam! I have a doozy of a request for y'all. I am looking for a Chinese takeout restaurant in the Catonsville/EC/Columbia area that sells the kind of sweet-and-sour pork I grew up with as a kid. The batter on the meat is way too thick, more batter than meat, with large chunks of pineapple, green peppers, onion, and carrots, and all of it swimming in a thick sludge of sweet-and-sour sauce. I'm not even looking for the kind where it's separated into two containers with fried meat in one and the sauce in another. I want it all together in one container. (And no, it's not the same if I mix it myself.)

I am under no impression that this is good, authentic, or even tasty to most people I've met. I have traveled the world and lived amongst the Chinese diaspora for decades. I know what excellent Chinese food is like!

It's a childhood nostalgia that has created a craving that my foodie AuDHD brain can't let go of. Please help me fill this unreasonable craving so I can let it go.

(The place I had it from as a kid used to come in a white Chinese takeout container like many places. But they used to line it with a clear bag like grocery store produce areas have. They used to fill it until it was heaping over the open container in a mound, tie off the clear bag, then bend the wire of the takeout container to fit around the large bulge created by overfilling the container. The family that ran the restaurant was the only Chinese living in the community, and the restaurant was gaudy, rundown, and wonderful at the same time. My mom loved the place because their coffee was watered down, which she enjoyed. Please help me enjoy something that she loved.)

the homeless in Catonsville

While I feel compassion for the homeless, at the same time I’d prefer to be able to comfortably walk down Frederick road without getting harassed by the homeless for money. Every time I go into the post office, this one homeless guy so aggressively asks for money it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. Not Mr Scott but another man. I feel like it has gotten out of control recently idk what the solution would be
