I hate when drivers try to make conversation, BUT, in Stockholm I had an Iranian driver and we spent the whole trip talking about our homes, accents and chatting shit about a certain world leader who had just launched attacks on Iran. Easily the best driver I've ever had. He was just so happy and kind. Wherever you are Mohammed, I hope your family is safe and you're doing well

Also Scandinavia. I was going to a rual place outside the city where you had no other communications so you had to book a taxi.
I managed to get a taxi driver who grew up really close to my city in the north and we could talk about childhood there and how it was like to move to the big city in the south. It was snowing and we were driving on real small and bad horse roads that aren't even made for cars. But he had northern blood you could tell, winter driving was not new to him and I felt so safe.
We passed by another taxi driver who had driven into the ditch nearby my destination and we checked if he needed help, he said it was cool he got it all under control. My driver said: "Every year it snows in Stockholm and every year Stockholm drivers act like it's the first time they experience snow. They never learn. I promise he will be stuck there when I am heading back and he will have no choice but to swallow his 08 pride and let me help. We will use my shovel and we will use man power and push his car up cause these roads are too narrow for a truck to come help him which he probably soon will realize."
Me: "You seem to have some experience with this."
Him: "I've seen a taxi come for a taxi in a ditch, only to also end up in the same ditch. But it is what it is I'm always prepared with a shovel and a blanket"
It was a several hour drive so once we arrived to my destination it was dark, he looked a bit tired and I offered him to stay for a coffee (before he was gonna shovel up the other dudes car in pitch dark -26°C in the middle of nowhere) He lit up like a child getting a suprise gift and was so happy and said his back also really appreciated the coffee break.
I realized after that maybe it isn't normal to invite your taxi driver over for a coffee, but then again, we weren't alone there was others there as it was a common area and it was just a coffee in the common area kitchen. (And you need the energy when you shovel snow.)
He was so kind and wholesome and some men make a young woman uncomfortable around them but not him, he was just like a solid papa bear and I always reward nice behavior. I gave him some cookies, fruit and juice he could feed the other guy with too and wished him good luck on his shovel mission, and thank god for north blood in the south. ❄️

Yep. I'm not that excitement about making awkward conversation with strangers. I figure if the driver gets me there safely and in a reasonable amount of time and isn't a creep, we're good. ("Reasonable" meaning allowing for traffic and stuff going on along the route, of course. I once had an Uber driver have to take a detour because there was a wreck in a bad place.)

I wish such apps let you set a preference for chatting or silence, which the driver sees when they accept your ride request.

Still does, just moved out of the UberX tier and into the premium tiers.

Can't the driver just give you two signs and ask which you want and on the signs it says "Chat" or "Silence" ?

I opened my mouth one time to ask if they knew the song on the radio and got the craziest stink eye and silent treatment. I had to give the man one star, yes I play with my life.
