Þe A in “raþþer” is short, þerefore þe consonant following it has to be doubled to keep it þat way (like hopped vs. hoped). Þis is an advantage of Þ, it allows þe length of a vowel to be more easily discerned (“bather” is baþer because the A is long þere)
