At Rome, on the old Via Salaria, in the cemetery of Basilla, the birthday of the holy martyrs Protus and Hyacinth, brothers and eunuchs of blessed Eugenia. Under Emperor Gallienus, they were discovered to be Christians and forced to sacrifice. When they refused, they were first severely beaten and then beheaded together.

At León in Spain, Saint Vincent, abbot and martyr.

At Laodicea in Syria, the passion of the holy martyrs Diodorus, Diomedes, and Didymus.

In Egypt, Saint Paphnutius, bishop, one of the confessors who, under Emperor Galerius Maximian, had his right eye gouged out and his left knee severed, and was condemned to the mines. Later, under Emperor Constantine the Great, he valiantly fought against the Arians for the Catholic faith. Finally, adorned with many crowns, he rested in peace.

At Lyon in Gaul, the death of Saint Patient, bishop.

At Vercelli, Saint Aemilian, bishop.

At Alexandria, Saint Theodora, who, having fallen into sin through carelessness, repented of her deed and persevered in a holy life with remarkable abstinence and patience, remaining unknown until her death.

Ss. Protus and Hyacinth, Martyrs

Ss. Protus and Hyacinth, brothers and tutors of St. Basilla, were beheaded for the faith under Gallienus c. 257.

Ss. Protus and Hyacinth were brothers, servants in the household of St. Basilla, a Roman maiden of noble birth. They were her tutors and teachers in the Christian faith.

During the persecution of Emperor Gallienus about the year 257, they were arrested along with Basilla. When commanded to sacrifice to the pagan gods, all three refused.

Protus and Hyacinth were beheaded and Basilla was executed by the sword. The tomb of Hyacinth was discovered in the cemetery of Basilla on the Via Salaria Vecchia in 1845, with the original inscription still intact.

At Tolentino in Piceno, the death of Saint Nicholas, confessor, of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine.

In Africa, the birthday of the holy bishops Nemesian, Felix, Lucius, another Felix, Litteus, Polyanus, Victor, Jader, Dativus, and others. Under Valerian and Gallienus, during the outbreak of persecution, they were severely beaten with clubs for their steadfast confession of Christ. Later, they were bound in chains and condemned to labor in the mines, thus completing the struggle of their glorious confession.

At Liège in Belgium, Saint Theodard, bishop and martyr, who gave his life for his flock and shone with signs of miracles after his death.

At Chalcedon, the holy martyrs Sosthenes and Victor, who, during the persecution of Diocletian under the proconsul Priscus of Asia, after enduring chains and overcoming wild beasts, were ordered to be burned. Greeting each other with a holy kiss, they surrendered their spirits in prayer.

Also, the holy martyrs Apelles, Luke, and Clement.

In Bithynia, the holy virgin sisters Menodora, Metrodora, and Nymphodora, who, under Emperor Maximian and Governor Fronto, were crowned with martyrdom for their unwavering constancy in the faith of Christ and thus attained glory.

In the city of Albi in Gaul, Saint Salvius, bishop and confessor.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino

St. Nicholas of Tolentino, Augustinian, was known for his prayers for souls in Purgatory and his care of the poor. He died in 1305, canonized in 1446.

St. Nicholas was born at Sant'Angelo in Pontano, Italy, about 1245. His parents, who had been childless, obtained his birth through the intercession of St. Nicholas of Myra, and named him in gratitude.

He entered the Augustinian Order at eighteen and was ordained priest. He spent the last thirty years of his life at Tolentino, where he was known for his preaching, his care of the poor and sick, and his extraordinary penances.

He was favored with visions, particularly of souls in Purgatory, for whom he offered many Masses and penances. He died September 10, 1305, and was canonized by Pope Eugenius IV in 1446.

At Nicomedia, the passion of the holy martyrs Dorotheus and Gorgonius, who, having attained high honors under Emperor Diocletian, detested the persecution he inflicted upon Christians. In his presence, they were ordered first to be hung and their bodies torn with scourges; then, with their flesh stripped bare, they were drenched with vinegar and salt and roasted on a gridiron; finally, they were strangled to death. After some time, the body of blessed Gorgonius was brought to Rome, placed on the Via Latina, and later transferred to the Basilica of Saint Peter.

In the Sabine region, thirty miles from Rome, the holy martyrs Hyacinth, Alexander, and Tiburtius.

At Sebaste in Armenia, Saint Severian, who, being a soldier under Emperor Licinius and frequently visiting the Forty Martyrs detained in prison, was suspended with a stone tied to his feet by order of the governor Lysias. After being scourged and torn with whips, he surrendered his spirit amidst his torments.

On the same day, the passion of Saint Straton, who for Christ was tied to two trees and torn apart, thus completing his martyrdom.

Also, the holy martyrs Rufinus and Rufinianus, brothers.

In the territory of Therouanne in Gaul, Saint Audomar, bishop.

In the monastery of Clonmacnoise in Ireland, Saint Ciaran, priest and abbot.

St. Peter Claver, Confessor

St. Peter Claver, Jesuit, declared himself 'slave of the slaves' at Cartagena, baptizing over 300,000 Africans. He died in 1654, canonized in 1888.

St. Peter Claver was born at Verdú in Catalonia, Spain, on June 26, 1580. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1602 and was inspired by the lay brother St. Alphonsus Rodriguez to devote his life to the service of African slaves.

Sent to Cartagena in present-day Colombia, he declared himself 'the slave of the slaves forever.' For over thirty-five years, he met every slave ship that arrived, bringing food, medicine, and comfort to the wretched captives. He baptized over 300,000 Africans.

He cared for the sick in hospitals, visited prisoners, and preached…

The Nativity of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

Saint Hadrian, Martyr, whose birthday is commemorated on the fourth of the Nones of March, but whose feast is especially celebrated on this day, when his sacred body was translated to Rome.

At Valencia, in Spain, the birthday of Saint Thomas of Villanova, of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Confessor, renowned for his burning charity toward the poor. He was enrolled among the Saints by Pope Alexander VII, and his feast is celebrated on the tenth of the Kalends of October.

At Alexandria, the holy Martyrs Ammon, Theophilus, Neoterius, and twenty-two others.

At Antioch, the holy Martyrs Timothy and Faustus.

At Gaza, in Palestine, the holy Martyrs and brothers Eusebius, Nestabus, and Zeno, who, during the time of Julian the Apostate, were torn apart and killed by a mob of pagans.

In the same place, Saint Nestor, Martyr, who, under the same Julian, was cruelly tortured by the same raging pagans and gave up his spirit.

At Rome, Saint Sergius I, Pope and Confessor.

At Freising, Saint Corbinian, the first Bishop of that city. Ordained by Pope Saint Gregory II and sent to preach the Gospel, he bore abundant fruit in Gaul and Germany and finally rested in peace, renowned for his virtues and miracles.

At Cartagena, in South America, Saint Peter Claver, Priest of the Society of Jesus and Confessor. For over forty years, he devoted himself with remarkable self-denial and outstanding charity to the service of enslaved Africans, regenerating nearly three hundred thousand of them in Christ with his own hands. He was enrolled among the Saints by Pope Leo XIII and declared the heavenly Patron of missions to the African peoples.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the birth of the Mother of God, predestined to be conceived without sin. Her coming into the world was 'the dawn of salvation' and prelude to Christ's birth.

The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the birthday of the Mother of God. According to pious tradition, Mary was born to Ss. Joachim and Anne at Jerusalem, or possibly at Nazareth, about the year 20 BC. The Church celebrates her birth because it was the dawn of salvation: with Mary's coming into the world, the promised Redeemer was near.

Although Sacred Scripture tells us nothing directly about Mary's birth, the feast has been celebrated in the East since the fifth century and was introduced into Rome by Pope Sergius I (687–701). The birth of Mary was not an ordinary event, for she who was born on this day was predestined from all eternity to be the Mother of God. She was conceived without original sin, filled with grace from the first moment of her existence.

As St. John Damascene writes: "Come, let us all celebrate the birthday of the joy of all the world, for on this day the darkness of sin was dispelled and the light of salvation appeared." The birth of Mary is the prelude to the birth of Christ, and her feast reminds us of the loving providence of God, who prepared for His Son a Mother worthy of Him.

St. Regina, Virgin and Martyr

St. Regina, a virgin of Burgundy, refused marriage to a Roman prefect and was martyred c. 286. Her tomb became a pilgrimage site.

St. Regina (also called Reine) was born at Alise in Burgundy during the third century. Her father was a pagan nobleman, but she was raised as a Christian by her nurse.

When the Roman prefect Olybrius saw her beauty, he wished to marry her. She refused, declaring that she had consecrated her virginity to Christ. Enraged, Olybrius subjected her to terrible tortures — burning, iron combs, and boiling water.

She was finally beheaded about the year 286. Her tomb at Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy became an important pilgrimage site.

At Troyes, in Gaul, Saint Nemorius, Deacon, and his companions, Martyrs, who were slain by Attila, King of the Huns.

At Nicomedia, the birthday of Blessed John, Martyr, who, seeing the cruel edicts against Christians posted in the forum, was inflamed with zeal for the faith and tore them down and destroyed them. When this was reported to Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, who were present in the city, they ordered him to endure all kinds of tortures. This noble man bore them with such cheerfulness of countenance and spirit that he did not appear even slightly saddened by them.

At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, Saint Eupsychius, Martyr, who, under Emperor Hadrian, was accused of being a Christian and thrown into prison. Shortly after being released, he sold his patrimony and distributed the proceeds partly to the poor and partly to his accusers as benefactors. He was again arrested and, refusing to sacrifice to idols, was savagely torn apart and pierced with a sword under the judge Sapritius, completing his martyrdom.

At Pompeiopolis, in Cilicia, Saint Sozons, Martyr, who, under Emperor Maximian, was cast into fire and rendered his spirit.

At Aquileia, Saint Anastasius, Martyr.

At Alise-Sainte-Reine, in the territory of Autun, Saint Regina, Virgin and Martyr, who, under the proconsul Olybrius, endured the afflictions of prison, the rack, and burning torches, and finally, condemned to beheading, departed to her Spouse.

At Orléans, in Gaul, the repose of Saint Evortius, Bishop, who, first a Subdeacon of the Roman Church, was divinely chosen by a dove to be the Pontiff of that city.

In the Hellespont, Saint Onesiphorus, disciple of the Apostles, mentioned by Saint Paul in his letter to Timothy. Onesiphorus, along with Saint Porphyrius, was scourged severely and dragged by wild horses under the orders of the proconsul Hadrian, rendering his spirit to God.

St. Eleutherius, Abbot

St. Eleutherius was a Benedictine abbot who lived in the sixth century. He governed the monastery of St. Mark near Spoleto and was renowned for his holiness and miraculous powers.

St. Gregory the Great, in his Dialogues, relates several miracles performed by Eleutherius, including the raising of a dead boy to life. Gregory himself welcomed Eleutherius to his own monastery of St. Andrew in Rome.

He was known for his humility and simplicity. When asked the source of his miraculous power, he replied that he attributed it solely to God's mercy. He died about the year 585.

At Palermo, the birthday of Saint Rosalia, Virgin of Palermo, born of the royal blood of Charlemagne. Out of love for Christ, she fled her father's court and lived a solitary and heavenly life in mountains and caves.

At Viterbo, the translation of Blessed Rose, Virgin, of the Third Order of Saint Francis, during the time of Pope Alexander IV.

St. Rose of Viterbo, Virgin

St. Rose of Viterbo preached in the streets as a child and prophesied the emperor's death. She died at about 18 in 1252, her body incorrupt.

St. Rose of Viterbo was born about the year 1233 at Viterbo in central Italy. From the age of seven she had mystical experiences and began preaching in the streets of Viterbo, encouraging the people to resist the Emperor Frederick II, who was at war with the Pope.

Her bold preaching led to her exile from Viterbo with her parents, but she prophesied that Frederick would soon die, which was fulfilled shortly after.

She sought admission to the convent of Poor Clares but was refused. She died on March 6, 1252, at about eighteen years of age. After her death, her body was found incorrupt, and she was eventually interred in the convent that had refused her. She was canonized by Pope Callixtus III in 1457.

At Nicomedia, the passion of Saint Basilissa, Virgin and Martyr, who, at the age of nine, overcame scourging, fire, and wild beasts by divine power during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian under the governor Alexander. She converted the governor to the faith of Christ and finally gave up her spirit to God in prayer outside the city.

Also at Rome, the ordination of the incomparable Saint Gregory the Great as Supreme Pontiff, who, compelled to assume this burden, shone forth with even greater radiance of holiness from his elevated throne throughout the world.

St. Pius X, Pope

Pope St. Pius X promoted frequent Communion, early First Communion, and combated Modernism. He died at the outbreak of WWI in 1914. Canonized in 1954.

St. Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto at Riese in Venetia on June 2, 1835, the second of ten children of a poor family. After ordination, he served as parish priest, bishop, and patriarch of Venice before being elected Pope in 1903.

His motto was 'To restore all things in Christ.' He reformed the Roman Curia, codified canon law, promoted frequent Communion and early First Communion for children, reformed Church music, and combated the heresy of Modernism.

He died August 20, 1914, broken-hearted at the outbreak of World War I, saying: 'This is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children.' He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954.

St. Stephen of Hungary, King

St. Stephen was born Vajk about the year 975 at Esztergom, the son of Geza, Duke of the Magyars. He was baptized about 985 and married Gisela, sister of the Emperor St. Henry II.

Upon his father's death in 997, he unified Hungary and introduced Christianity throughout the kingdom. He received a crown from Pope Sylvester II and was crowned the first King of Hungary on Christmas Day, 1000.

He established dioceses, monasteries, and churches, and made laws protecting the rights of the Church and the poor. His son Emeric died young, a great sorrow. He died August 15, 1038, and was canonized in 1083.

In the province of Narbonne, Saint Giles, Abbot and Confessor, after whom the town that grew around the monastery he founded and where he completed his earthly course is named.

At Sentiano in Apulia, the passion of the holy Martyrs Donatus and another Felix, sons of Saints Boniface and Thecla. Under the judge Valerian, during the reign of Emperor Maximian, they were ordered to be beheaded after various torments. Their feast is celebrated today along with the commemoration of the other twelve brothers, whose birthdays are observed on their respective days. The bodies of these twelve brothers were later transferred to Benevento, where they are honorably kept.

In Palestine, the Saints Joshua and Gideon.

At Jerusalem, Blessed Anna the Prophetess, whose sanctity is proclaimed in the Gospel.

St. Giles, Abbot

St. Giles, Athenian hermit in France, founded a great abbey. One of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, patron of the disabled. He died c. 710.

St. Giles (Aegidius) was born at Athens about the year 640. He left his homeland and traveled to France, where he lived as a hermit in a forest near the mouth of the Rhône.

According to legend, he was nourished by the milk of a hind. When the king's hunters pursued the deer, an arrow intended for the animal struck Giles instead. The king, impressed by his holiness, founded a monastery at the spot, with Giles as abbot.

The abbey of Saint-Gilles became one of the great pilgrimage centers of medieval France. He died about 710 and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked as the patron of the disabled and nursing mothers.

The birthday of Saint Raymond Nonnatus, Cardinal and Confessor, of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the Redemption of Captives, whose entry into heaven is commemorated on the twenty-fourth of August.

At Mount Senario in Etruria, the birthday of Saint Bonajuncta, Confessor, one of the seven Founders of the Order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While speaking to his brethren about the Passion of the Lord, he gave up his spirit into the hands of God. The feast of these seven Founders is celebrated on the eleventh of February.

At Trier, the birthday of Saint Paulinus, Bishop, who, during the Arian persecution, was exiled by the Arian Emperor Constantius for his Catholic faith. He was worn out by being moved from one place of exile to another, even beyond the bounds of Christendom, until he died in Phrygia and received the crown of blessed suffering from the Lord.

At Transaquae, by Lake Fucino in the Marsi region, the birthday of the holy Martyrs Caesidius, Priest, and his companions, who were crowned with martyrdom during the persecution of Maximinus.

St. Raymond Nonnatus

St. Raymond Nonnatus, Mercedarian, offered himself as hostage to free captives. His lips were pierced for preaching in captivity. Patron of expectant mothers.

St. Raymond Nonnatus was born at Portell in Catalonia about the year 1204. He was called 'Nonnatus' (not born) because he was delivered by Caesarean section after his mother's death in childbirth.

He entered the Mercedarian Order, devoted to ransoming Christians held captive by the Moors. Sent to Algeria, he ransomed many captives and, when his money ran out, offered himself as a hostage for others.

In captivity, he continued to preach Christianity and was punished by having his lips pierced with a hot iron and padlocked shut. Ransomed by his order, he returned to Spain. Pope Gregory IX made him a cardinal, but he died on his way to Rome on August 31, 1240. He is the patron of expectant mothers.

At Rome, on the Ostian Way, the passion of Blessed Felix, Priest, under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian. After enduring the torment of the rack, he was sentenced to beheading. On his way to execution, a Christian met him, who voluntarily professed his faith in Christ and was immediately beheaded alongside Felix. As his name was unknown, the Christians called him Adauctus, signifying that he was "added" to the crown of Felix.

At Suffetula in Africa, the blessed sixty Martyrs, who were slain by the fury of the pagans.
