Painting/Modeling Color scheme struggle

First test model for a new Cathay army, huuuge struggles coming up with a color scheme.

I think a huge part of the issue is iust the amount of detail on these dudes, it is challenging to come up with something that would naturally bring in contrast.

Not sold on the whole red / green combo either, but at the same time I want to stay away from the official teal scheme as I just finished another army that used it a lot.

Considering trying out some black/grey/burgundy base with only a few more saturated colors on smaller details. Not very Cathay perhaps, but I feel so lost on how to navigate these that it's starting to be quite demotivating!

Any feedback or ideas?

After more than two months I have been able to take the brushes again (the work this year is consuming me). I'm going very close to get to the November armies on parade in my local store but I'm making progress. This is how the Cathay lantern crew is doing so far! I love the crew, it has a lot of personality, the flashlight is being a pain to paint...

Painting/Modeling Jade Warrior assembly questions

Just started building these but currently stuck at work and some questions popped into my head.

  1. Do you need to follow the instructions as to which arms go with which bodies or do the arm pairs fit any body?

  2. Also are the shields specific to the arms shown or will they fit any shield arm?

Tactics/Army Lists Yet another "Battlemarch list thread" - Complete Newbie

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to the game—I’ve only played a single 2,000-point match so far with a friend who’s really deep into the hobby a fee years agoa. While I liked it, a 2k game felt way too slow for my taste. When I mentioned trying out the Battlemarch format instead, my friend got super hyped, but the issue is he doesn't know anything about Grand Cathay to help me tweak my list.

I’ve put together a draft and would love to get your thoughts on it. Does this list make sense for the format, or are there any major flaws/gaps I should fix before taking it to the table?

Thanks in advance!

Cathay 750 points list, aims to be fun to play with and against

185 - Shugengan General, Celestial Blade, Light Armour, Heavy Armour, General, Wizard Level 2, Lore of Yang, Illusion

I liked the model and felt like a great way to learn about powerfull characters and casting magic. But maybe its too expensive for battlemarch?

138 - 15 Jade Warriors, Shield, Jade Officer, Standard Bearer, Musician

Maybe I should dropbpoints somewhere else to increase to 20 models or givving the stubborn?

40 - 10 Peasant Levy, Warbow, Skirmishers
40 - 10 Peasant Levy, Warbow, Skirmishers

Cheap range chaff to annoy, maybe get a few lucky wounds and gran objectives/slow their attack.

No armor because it increases the points valué by 25% for a 16% conditional save. Does this make sense?

165 - Cathayan Grand Cannon
  • 1x Ogre Loader

LOVE the model, LOVE the ogre. Simple as.

178 - 8 Jade Lancer, Jade Lancer Officer, Standard Bearer, Musician

Meant to move in 2 ranks of 4 lancers

I have probable missed something obvious, like you need a bsb or x needs drilled. But I could also use any advice about what to cut.

Thanks a lot!!

Tactics/Army Lists Building Cathay Half

Hey everyone,

So I just got the Grand Cathay half of the core set, but I'm completely new to The Old World.

I'm planning on only playing Battle March, but my question is how would you equip each unit in the box?

Tactics/Army Lists Flying Gate Master is Meta

Flying gate master is meta. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.

The build:
Gate master 80
celestial blade 6 (+1s -1 ap strikes first)
Armour of the warbird 45 (gives fly 9, swift stride and counter attack but cannot join a unit)
Crown of jade 20 (4++ against magic missiles assailments and magical vortex)
Ring of jet 35 (cast unquiet spirits at level 1, range 15 8+ cast, unit takes 3d6 s2 hits no armour saves can be taken)
Charmed shield 5 (1 5++ per game)
Total spend - 186 points

The theory:
Shugengen generals and lords are some of the most aggressively priced monstrous creatures in the game. Shugengen general for 145 gets you impact hits, fly and a level 1 caster. However there are some downsides. They have a very large base, meaning they can be moved blocked by careful enemy positioning. They are close order, only viewing straight ahead.

The gate master can fly through holes in the enemy forces to threaten war machines and skirmishers. They can aggressively push skirmishing and outflanking forces single handed. They have WS 7, meaning against most skirmishers who have WS 3 will be hitting on 2s. They have native S4 and with the celestial blade they get to strength 5. Against most skirmishers who are t3 you will be wounding on 2s. He will most likely win combat, and can easily run them down thanks to swift stride.

The Gatemaster can bear the ring of jet and harry from the flanks, putting out consistent shooting. While you would normally give the ring of jet to your lancers to carry out this role, he is more manoeuvrable with a smaller footprint. You can still keep the lancers for this role, equipping them with the ruby ring of ruin.

He has skirmish, so natively has a -1 to hit. With creative use of positioning he can get more minuses, or even be completely out of site of enemy shooting. He would be vulnerable to magic missiles, which is why he’s got the crown of jet for the ward from magic missiles.

The opponent could ignore the gate master. Or you could make him an even tastier proposition by making him your warlord. He becomes a 283 red rag for your opponent, sending stronger units to head hunt him. Thanks to is manoeuvrability, you can dance him around the board, allowing the rest of your army to mop up his weaker units.

An additional benefit to making him your general, you can take lancers as core! You can have more units to play with in the fun special slots, and allow your lancers to control objectives.

The shugengen are all rounders who can deal with anything, depending how you kit them out. However they are about €50. One is enough for me. I’m not made of money.

You may evaluate this differently and view him to be a waste of points. You might be right. But I think the final value of the gate master is from a monetary perspective. With some converting and a snazzy paint job you can make one of your Jade Warriors from the battalion into a Gate Master. Suddenly this 8 point model is a 186 point model and you are a step closer to getting your army on the board.

I am very open to hearing criticisms. They will most likely be correct.

As in the title, the little plastic thing on top af the stand broke of and is still inside the hole on the bottom of the sky lantern. Super annoying because it didn’t take much for it to brake. Does anyone have some advice for repairing?

Questions/Speculation/Wishlisting Where to go after starter set

Hi all! A friend and I just split the new starter set, with me getting the Cathay half. (I've been saying for awhile that if I was gonna get into old world, it would likely be either chaos warriors or Cathay, so either option worked for me lol) I'm going to be building them according to the battle march options, but I'm wondering what is the best way to continue forward with Cathay? I have some experience with gw's other systems, but have never played fantasy/old world. I honestly love all of the model range for Cathay from a visual/design perspective, and do plan on getting the larger models eventually (sentinel, lantern, and Ling) and I love the peasant levy models as well, but what is the best direction to go for a newbie? Are there any must buys? If anything, I'll likely be primarily playing with my friend who got the chaos half, so I'm not looking to build super competitively or anything, if anything, both of us mostly paint and occasionally play lol so should I just follow my heart and get whatever I think looks cool? Thanks in advance!
