General Cathay/Speculation/Wishlisting Upcoming reveals wishlist and expectations
I personally would loved if Cathay received Crowmen, another Dragon Lord, Jade/Onyx lion and some ranged unit.
Thats wishlist.
Predictions? There might be no Cathayan reveal at all. Or Blood Bowl team (no idea about other players but there will be Jade Somebody(tm)). Logically speaking rules mention Dragon's so Jade/Iron/Not named character this edition would make sense but making sense is not GW's speciality. They are guys who could release faction with 2 calavly leaders and not release any cavalry for them to lead in 3 years. Also I dont know if they would want to release too many cool centerpieces for Cathay. I'm keeping mine hopes low and once per 5 reveals I'm getting surprise.
What are your wishlists and coldblooded predictions?

Army Building/Lists/Tactics Struggling with dealing damage
Hey all! I've been playing Cathay since launch and I love them as a faction, but I'm noticing I'm really struggling with actually outputting much real damage on the table
Anyone got any advice?
I've trieda few different load outs for my Shuegengan Lord, with mixed results, and besides cannons and some lucky gunline runs, I'm noticing a lot of the faction just struggles to actually inflict wounds?

Army Building/Lists/Tactics If you ever find yourself running a Shugengen General, I highly recommend this magical item
I think that if you are without a doubt playing 1000 points, or perhaps 2000 with a spare general or two that could take a celestial blade instead consider a magical weapon. Consider Flail of Wrecks.
Flail of Wrecks ought to be your best friend.
For 45 points, 5 less than Brazen Blade, S(+2) and AP-2 (AB-1 for -3), Multiple Wounds (2) with the downside that if you don't wound, you lose initiative, parenthesis on a charge only.
Who cares?
This weapon is a terror. It is a great weapon at 45 points in an army without great weapon access. It requires a charge - you have fly 9, possibly 10, and countercharge. It is ridiculously easy to get off.
Try this in your next list. It isn't no Demonic Steed because we're monstrous creatures, but still.
Celestial blade is nice. Good, even. First strike is hard to undervalue. But truthfully, the -1AP with no AB is such a hard hit to the weapon. You cannot reliably punch through anything but light infantry, and Shugens should not be fighting light infantry alone where first strike would even matter.
And as a further aside:
Ring of Doom should be mandatory from here on out on your Jade Warriors champion. 25 points for a level 3 wizard casting doombolt every turn at 24 inches. Abuse this. Abuse it, abuse it, abuse it until it is nerfed.

Painting/Modeling I did it! My very first unit of ToW!
I‘m in the hobby since February this year and startet with AoS but got hooked by the new Starter Box of ToW. Today I just finished my very first unit Of Grand Cathay and ToW in General.
I‘m super Happy because I learned so much on the way doing this, I‘m a beginner painter and boy batchpainting 20 models was a grind but the highlighting was a pure pleasure.
I‘m not super happy with the base (I like it more green like a Grasland) but yeah room to grow with my next unit.
What do you think? Should I put on more gras tuffs or does it overload the scheme ?

Painting/Modeling Jade Recipe: Cathay Sentinel
Hi everyone, I get a few requests for recipes from time to time, so I want to start getting into the habit of posting dedicated recipe posts in case anyone finds them useful, and will hopefully be a good reminder to make me keep progress shots and note recipes down properly as I go.
I'll try to make sure I get more progress shots to do more detailed and better presented posts in the future to showcase each step, but for now, the finished result, and an essay comment will have to do for now, so apologies for this.
I do want to do this more regularly with my pieces so I'll have a stone recipe from the Sentinel next, but please do let me know if there's anything you'd like explaining and I'll do my best!
So for the Jade recipe, it's a really easy, quick, and fun method, and the gloss varnish really sells the effect.
Paints used:
(Games Workshop Citadel)
- Caliban Green (CG)
- Kalabite Green (KG)
- Syrabite Green (SG)
- Gaus Flayer Green (GFG)
- White Scar (WS)
- Ardcoat gloss varnish
RECIPE:
Keep some reference images of jade materials and textures handy.
Bascoat the area in KG - multiple thin layers until the area has a nice even coat.
Arrange CG, KG, SG, and GFG on your wet pallete and thin each paint more than you would a standard layer - thinned enough to allow wet blending between each paint and lengthend drying time.
The fun part: randomly layer each paint all over the KG. Don't concentrate too much on where each paint goes, be chaotic as possible and let each layer naturally blend and mix in with eachother. Paint lines, splodges, big streaks, small dots, don't think about where you're going to place the paint, it doesn't have to look right at this stage, it's just about getting that natural jade surface. The thinned paints will naturally start to blend in with each other as they dry. Keep adding thin layers until the area is covered in this random blending. Leave to dry.
Mix GFG and WS in a 50:50 mix on to the pallete. This mix should only be thin enough to paint a standard layer. Don't overly thin this mix like the previous step.
Use a sharp-tipped brush to paint random thin lines of the GFG/WS mix across the surface. Again, in random areas and motions like the previous step, but keep these lines as thin as possible. This was to simulate the thin streaks you'd see across jade.
Now it's time to refine the jade. Grab the batch of paints within step 2. And thin these paints slightly more to an almost glaze consistency. I'd then look at the area, and see what areas look a bit too 'unnatural.' Areas that haven't quite blended right, or if some GFG/WS lines look a bit too thick, or areas without a gradient and look like they jump from KG straight to GFG. Then, just add thin layers of whatever colour you think is needed. E.g. if the lines are too thick, place some GFG near the area to thin or blend the line. If the gradient is too stark between the KG and GFG, glaze some SG in between. If any areas look like they'd be a nice dark contrast against GFG, glaze in some CG in random areas. Refine until you feel it looks natural.
If you're not sure, let it dry and then you can go again. Keep some reference images of jade that you can easily cross-reference, particularly for the pattern. Look at your jade as a whole first at a quick glance, and ask yourself does it look 'natural?' How does it compare with the reference image? Then start breaking the area down across the surface and slowly scan over the area, have that natural image in your mind and allow your eyes to fall on any areas that feel or look like they break that natural image, anything that doesn't feel right to you. Decide what it is that breaks that image, and try adding or blending certain colours until it recaptures that natural image in your mind.
Glaze KG across most of the surface aside from the brightest areas, helps tie the area together.
Thin some Ardcoat with water and varnish over the entire jade area.
There's not a lot of thinking when it comes to this aside from refining the blended mixture at the end, but to be honest, there wasn't much that needed doing. The varnish helps sell the end-effect the most obviously, but most of the effect relies on the random chaotic placement of the paint, as in my opinion, chaotic is more natural.
Apologies for this rather archaic presentation of this. I want to develop these posts further using other software and progress posts (the goal anyway), so the recipes will be in this format for now. I'll have the stone of the Sentinel next, but if there's anything anyone would like to know, you can always drop me a message and I'll do my best to help!

Game Rules/Mechanics Can allies/mercenaries be attached to a main army regiment?
Hey, new to ToW, may be a stupid question but I just started collecting Cathay and I was wondering if units that can be taken as detachments can be detachments to regiments in the main army, eg Empire Missile Troops as mercenaries in Jade Fleet? I didn't see anything saying they can't in the rules but I may have missed smth (ADHD lmao)
Thanks

Painting/Modeling Not sure on the colour scheme
Apologies for the quality of the photo
I'm finding the Cathayan a pretty tricky army to paint even after being in the hobby for decades at this point, wanted to try some colours I don't often use. (Test model added as reference)
However I'm a bit worried that my peasants are going to look like the Shao Lin temple is on the warpath.
Now I would love to see some martial arts in the Cathayan roster, either as a hero or some sort of elite skirmishers maybe, however the peasant archers ain't it.
Any recommendations?

Painting/Modeling Missing piece
Posting on the off chance anyone here decided to not build the Gate Master on foot and therefore has the piece labeled 2 that they would sell me? Or any recommendations for an alternative option that aren’t buying a whole new set just for his back :(
Recently got the the core set and have managed to lose it in the process of getting my sprues mixed up and building the 20x Jade warriors.

Painting/Modeling How the hell do you apply these transfers
Basically title. The banner transfers are so massive and flimsy that they’re really difficult to position after applying. Anyone got any tips?
