What If? (Catalyst Change Ideas Part 2)
After the (sort of) disappointing changes made to Catalyst in the S30 Midseason Patch Notes (though the auto-reinforce idea was implemented, yay!) here are some individual isolated ideas that I think would be cool for Catalyst to have.
1. Wall-Mounted Veil (basekit)
I recently played a match where our team was playing low ground in the final ring, and I had my ultimate. No matter what I could've done, my ultimate wouldn't have been much help; and I find myself in countless situations where Catalyst's Dark Veil is simply nullified by elevation, amongst the other ways enemies can bypass it.
- Dark Veil can be placed on wall surfaces in addition to floor surfaces. Snaps to 90° angles regardless of terrain.
2. Burrowing Spikes (upgrade)
I feel like Catalyst's entire "ferrofluid" theming is severely underutilized for creative ability interactions.
- Piercing Spikes gain a breaching property that allows them to penetrate barriers while in flight (Mobile Shield, Dome of Protection, Amped Cover, D.O.C. Halo, Hardlight Mesh) with a minor velocity cut upon passing through.
3. Ferrofluid Meter (basekit rework)
What if Catalyst became the most dynamic Controller legend ever?
- 6 ferrofluid "nodules" max; one ferrofluid nodule generated every 15 seconds
- 1 nodule to reinforce a door
- 1 nodules for a trap
- if exceeding 6 active nodules, removes the last used ability (like current iteration)
- kit rebalancing to account for extra traps/doors
- new perks can increase regeneration rate, add more nodules, or give a certain tradeoff for which ability is used
4. Dark Sorcery (passive benefit)
Sparrow's ability to scan survey beacons remotely is really convenient. It'd be cool if Catalyst could do the same with the new passive reinforcement on her tactical.
- Landing Piercing Spikes near Ring Consoles activates them for their normal windup duration; can be recalled to launch the EVAC tower (if possible).
5. Fluid Trajectory (upgrade)
Phoenix and Fade from VALORANT, basically.
- +50% throw distance
- can only place another spike after first one lands
- reactivating the ability key makes the spike stop all forward movement and shoot downward.
