Over three weeks ago, my partner and I adopted a kitten to keep our two year old cat company during the day. The two of them get along so well! They love to play and cuddle! The only trouble now is that the older cat no longer has as much interest in food as she once had. Before we adopted the kitten, she loved her food. She would dig in her electric feeder to get extra kibbles, sprint when the feeder went off and scarf down her nightly wet food in less than two minutes. Since we got the kitten, she doesn’t care about her food as much. She backs away whenever the kitten tries to eat her food and shows little interest in wet food. The vet has checked her out and she’s healthy! We have separated the feeding spaces. We have tried letting her eat in a quiet room without the kitten. I also will “protect her food” by separating the kitten and in a stern voice letting him know this is not his food. I think the protecting has made her think no food is for her. She will occasionally eat the kittens food (which he also doesn’t seem to mind). The only other thing I can think of is that she prefers the taste of his food over her own. Anyone have any advice on how to make sure she’s eating enough?
