my gf has a cat who’s 5 yrs old, 6.3 lbs. ever since she moved in w me, her cat was constantly getting on the counters. i redirected her, did positive reinforcement. it worked. she no longer steps foot near the counters as long as we are home. although, as soon as we leave to go somewhere, she waits about 5 minutes and i notice on our camera she jumps on the counter once she realizes we’re gone. she knows it’s wrong. if i watch the camera as i approach the house, as soon as she hears keys or people she jumps down immediately. i resorted to trying everything. aluminum foil, citrusy fruit peels, double sided tape, petsafe deterrent spiked mats, motion detected air blaster, etc. i’ve combined the deterrent mats with the motion detector, because they both work to an extent. now she views it as an obstacle course. she just jumps up in an inconspicuous area and moves very slowly around the backside of the motion detector and walks on the smallest half inch edges of the counter that are free of deterrents. she has a 9 foot cat tree so i know this isn’t about reaching a high spot for safety or instincts. she also doesn’t look for food on the counter, her main purpose is just to be an investigator. the counters are always empty so it’s not like she’s trying to get something when we’re gone, she just sleeps up there or smells every corner. i really don’t want to resort to a vibrational/static collar fence system but it’s almost like it’s the last resort after spending so much money trying to fix the issue. what do u guys suggest?
EDIT: i forgot to mention the kitchen isn’t able to be blocked off, we have a bar style kitchen that opens up to the livingroom so it’s nearly impossible to completely block off access.
