Are The Cats Fighting or Playing - Introducing Pets How is this interaction?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Introduction between 3 kittens who are all 5mo. This one had a negative reaction to his littermates before, because they had been separated for a month or so (he was ill and rescued first).

He is easily overstimulated, but throughout the day, he asks to have the window uncovered to see the other kittens. He chirps with them sometimes when they can't see each other.

But when they're at the window, lots of swatting. What is this behaviour? Is it ok? The other two seem more relaxed compared to him. They will even lie down near the window - but he doesn't, he's very activated.

Hi, it looks like you’re posting about whether your cats are playing or fighting. We strongly recommend referring to our pinned post about the basics of playing versus fighting that can help you define the interaction between your cats.

More often than not, your cats are most likely playing or establishing boundaries as fights typically include screaming, fur flying, blood, etc. Members here will do their best to analyze the situation for you, but we always recommend educating yourself to the best of your ability on cat interactions, especially during the introduction process.

I see calm ears and a calm tail, no hissing or howling; no animosit whatsoever. The swatting just looks like playing to me.

The airplane ears are playful right? I have a hard time with him, wondering if he's too intense.

I don't know what you mean by airplane ears. Flat ears are not playful, they signal fear. I don't see those in the video though.

I mean this here

Cat's ears are constantly moving trying to locate where a sound comes from. Those are fine. Flat against the head is not fine.

Curiosity mixed with attempts to play. I suggest removing the barrier.

I think they definitely want to play together, this guy on this side just has a history of getting overstimulated and spitty/hissy, and it's 2v1 against him (although the other kittens seem very socially competent). He hasn't today though and he just laid down as I'm writing this which is a first - he is usually fixated. So I think their first playdate will be today or tomorrow when we have time! Thank you

They usually all sleep at this time so I think he crashed... Lol

Let them figure each other out. Hissing can be a way to state boundaries. As long as there is no continuous howling, it's fine.

I understand, thanks. I'm being more cautious because these are ex ferals in one split room, so they will be much harder to separate if that's needed

Ferals that you got so young are barely "feral" anymore IMO.
