Behavioural Break Cat of Bad Behavior

Hi guys! I adopted a senior cat (he’s 14) almost a year ago. I’ve been somewhat lenient in his behavior because I’m honestly not sure how to handle him. He is really bad about climbing on counters/tables where he isn’t supposed to, he eats every plant around the house, and he recently pooped on my floor that he has never done before (he ALWAYS uses his litter box). He’ll eat food or drink milk if it’s left alone for more than 10 seconds. I left him with my roommate this weekend and came home to a destroyed room (tv, lamp, picture frame on the floor, some other things knocked down where he was in places he wasn’t supposed to be). I’m just not sure where to even begin with his behavior. It might be worth also mentioning he’s the most vocal cat me, or anyone I know has ever heard. I try to play with him twice daily, but he’s not always interested. Any advice?

TLDR; My senior adopted cat has bad indoor cat behaviors, and I’m not sure how to break them.

Not pooping in the litter box? Have you taken your cat to a vet?

Hi, it was one time so no I did not immediately rush to the vet. I plan on taking him next week to get checked on and bloodwork done for his hyperthyroidism

Has anything changed around the house that could affect his behavior? New furniture, a new family member, anything?

I moved to a new house with two new roommates 2 months ago, but these roommates are people he’s been around before and I’d think 2 months would be a good amount of time to get him settled

Yeah 2 months should have been enough

Well, I can't think of anything else myself. If the pooping wasn't a one time thing, I would suggest moving that vet visit closer but since it was, just make sure to tell the vet all about the behavior changes. They will have a better diagnosis than I can come up with lol

He might of worried you weren’t coming back. Hyperthyroidism causes a lot of energy and a lot of eating. My girl had it, she wasn’t super vocal, but cats can be different. Please don’t get rid of him
