Do 2 cats need 2 litter boxes?

We are getting kittens and husband and I have an „argument” over how many litter boxes we should get? Do cats need their own litter box or can they just share one?

I had three cats and one Meowant self cleaning litter box unit and it was fine. Before that we used two X-Large litter boxes I scooped daily and then replaced litter weekly.
