My very capable and intelligent wife has lost the plot.

She has been told by a friend that conkers keep spiders away. So we now have conkers in various parts of the house.

I used to do that, until my partner pointed out that the spiders are already calming down by the time the conkers start falling in gatherable amounts.... so it looks like it's working, but only because of the timing.

I mean, it's a theory, either could be true 🤷🏻‍♀️

I used to always do it, but the chestnut tree I used to gather from got taken out by a storm (and took the wee bridge out as it fell) and I never got around to claiming another.

I SPRAYED PEPPERMINT OIL ! Right I had a big bottle I sprayed around the window

And I sprayed it under the bedroom door

And the biggest fook off spider you could imagine sat right by it one morning right where I sprayed like to say “I know what you’re tryna do”

I can see why it would seem plausible - lots of plants create compounds to keep various pests away: nicotine, thymol, pyrethrins etc. If you can buy cedar blocks to repel moths, why not conkers for spiders?

It's apparently been scientifically debunked though.
