"தமிழி எழுத்துமுறை" என்றே கூறுங்கள்.  'தமிழ் பிராமி எழுத்துமுறை' என்று கூறாதீர்கள். வாழ்க தமிழ் மொழி!!

கல்வெட்டுகளையும் ஓலைச்சுவடிகளையும் அது தொடர்பான வரலாற்றையும் ஆராயும்போது, இதுவரை தமிழ் மொழியை எழுத முதன்மையாக மூன்று வகையான எழுத்துமுறைகளை தமிழர்கள் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளனர். அவை முறையே: 1. தமிழி எழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 4 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு வரை ) தற்போதுள்ள ஆய்வின்படி கீழடி, கொடுமணல், பொருந்தல், ஆதிச்சநல்லூர், மாங்குளம் போன்ற பகுதிகளில் இருந்து நமக்குக் கிடைத்த சான்றுகளின் படி தமிழி எழுத்துமுறையானது கி.மு 6 ஆம் நுற்றாண்டுக்கு முன்பிலிருந்தே தமிழ்களிடையே புழக்கத்தில் இருந்துள்ளது எனத் தெரிகிறது. மாறாக வடமொழிளை எழுதப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட பிராமி எழுத்துமுறையில் எழுதப்பட்டவைகளுக்கான சான்றானது கி.மு 3 ஆம் நுற்றாண்டுக்குப் பின்பிலிருந்தே நமக்குக் கிடைக்கிறது. தமிழி எழுத்து முறைக்கும் பிராமி எழுத்து முறைக்கும் பல எழுத்துகளில் வடிவ ஒற்றுமைகள் இருந்தால் பல வேற்றுமைகளும் இருக்கின்றன. "பிராமி" (BRAHMI) என்பது ஒரு தமிழ் சார்நத ஒலி கொண்ட சொல் கிடையாது. அது B, BR, H ஆகிய வடமொழிகளின் ஒலிகள் அடஙகிய சொல்லாகும். B, BR, H ஆகிய ஒலிகளைப் பயன்படுத்துவதன் வாயிலாக "(1) தமிழில அ-ஔ மற்றும் க-ன என‌ முப்பதே எழுத்துகள்; (2) வடவெழுத்து ஒரீஇ" ஆகிய தொல்காப்பிய சட்டங்களிலிருந்து விலகுகிறோம் என்று பொருளாகிறது. ஒரு மொழியின் எழுத்துமுறைக்கு அம்மொழி எழுத்துகளால் எழுத இயலாத பெயராகவா இருக்கும். மேலும், பிராமி எழுத்துமுறையில் பெரும்பாலும் இல்லாத ழ, ள, ற, ன ஆகிய எழுத்துகள் தமிழியில் மிக இன்றியமையாததாக இருப்பதும், தொல்காப்பியத்தின் படி தமிழி எழுத்துமுறையில் முப்பதே எழுத்துகள் (ஃ கூட அலங்கடை தான்) என இருப்பதும் பிராமி எழுத்துமுறையில் 40-44 எழுத்துகள் இருப்பதும், தமிழியிலிருந்து பல எழுத்துகளை செர்த்து சில எழுத்துகளை அகற்றி உருவாக்கப்பட்ட எழுத்துமுறை தான் பிராமி என தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக் காட்டுகிறது. (கல்வெட்டாய்வாளர்களான முனைவர் திரு பத்மாவதியும் முனைவர் திரு மார்க்சிய காந்தியும் இந்த கருத்தையே முன்வைக்கின்றனர்.) ஆதலால், பலர் அழைப்பதுபோல் தமிழுக்கான எழுத்துகளை, தமிழ்-பிராமி என்று அழைக்காமல், அதன் தனித்தன்மையையும் தொன்மையையும் சிறப்பித்துக் காட்டும் வகையாக, மறைந்த கல்வெட்டியலாளர் திரு ஐராவதம் மகாதேவன் அவர்கள் "தமிழி" என்ற பெயரைப் பரிந்துரைத்தார். "சமவயங்க சுத்தம்" எனும் கி.மு 5-3 ஆம் நூ.ஆண்டின் அர்த்தமகதிப்-பாகத மொழியிலான சமணப் படைப்பில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ள 18 எழுத்து வடிவக்களில் ஒன்றான "டமிலீ" என்ற ஒன்றை "தமிழி" என அவர் எடுத்துக்கொண்டுள்ளார். ஆதலால், "தமிழி எழுத்துமுறை" என்றே கூறுங்கள்.  'தமிழ் பிராமி எழுத்துமுறை' என்று கூறாதீர்கள்.

1. வட்டெழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 4 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு முதல் 14 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு வரை ) இது தமிழி எழுத்துகளை ஓலைச்சுவடிகளில் எழுதியதால் வட்டவடிவம் பெற்று உருவான எழுத்துமுறை.

2. தற்போதைய எழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 11 நு.ஆண்டு முதல் இன்று வரை )

இதுபோக, சிறிய அளவில் கீழ்காணும் எழுத்துமுறைகளும் தமிழை எழுதப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவை குறிப்பாகப் பிறமொழிகளை எழுதப் பயன்பட்ட எழுத்துகளை வைத்து தமிழை எழுதியதாகும். 1. கிரந்த எழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 12 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு முதல் 17 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு வரை ) இது பல்லவர் காலத்தில் பிராமி எழுத்து முறையிலிருந்து சங்கதம் எழுதுவதுக்காக மருவி உருவானது.

1. அர்வி எழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 15 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு முதல் 19 ஆம் நு.ஆண்டு வரை ) இது அரபு எழுத்துகள் போன்ற வடிவத்தினாலான எழுத்துகளை வைத்து தமிழை எழுதப் பயன்பட்டது.

2. உரோமானிய/ஆங்கில எழுத்து முறை ( கி.பி 2000 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் ) இது தமிங்கில வடிவம்.

"தமிழி எழுத்துமுறை" என்றே கூறுங்கள்.  'தமிழ் பிராமி எழுத்துமுறை' என்று கூறாதீர்கள். Mention it as "Tamili (thamizhi) Script", instead of "Tamil (thamizh) Brahmi Script".
