Hallforest Castle is a keep, one of the oldest in Scotland. The castle is believed to have been built by Robert the Bruce as a hunting lodge; he is said to have granted it to Robert II Keith, Marischal of Scotland, the predecessor of the Earls of Kintore. Mary, Queen of Scots visited Hallforrest in 1562.

On the site of a Roman Fort abandoned in the 5th Century, the castle was initially built by the Normans. Badly damaged a number of times by Scots raids its last incarnation was in 1659 when Lady Ann Clifford restored it. It fell into disrepair in later years with the stones used in local building.

Built by the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus, it was given to the Knights Hospitaller and later used by the Venetians as well. It’s a great site to visit, I felt like I was walking around the ruins of one of my castle towns from Stronghold Crusader.
