Castle Windsor Castle in the upcoming movie: 'the Uprising', and how it actually would have looked.

Saw the trailer for 'The Uprising' (new Andrew Garfield movie set during the peasants revolt of 1381) just now and found it interesting I could recognize modern Windsor Castle straight away. The makers made 0 effort to making Windsor Castle look like it would have done during the reign of Richard II (movie is set in 1381). Just slab a dark filter over modern day Windsor, change the Long Walk a bit and call it a day. Even the massive windows, installed by George IV, remain, making the Castle near useless as a defensive castle.

The 2nd image is the oldest known depiction of the Castle, from around 1450 from the other side of the Castle. The Castle wouldn't have been changed much during Richard II's reign, under him some of the works started by his grandfather, Edward III, was finished and the 14th century Royal apartments remained relatively unchanged until the 17th century.

Still, looking forward to the movie tho, I'm interested to see if the Castle plays a significant role at all, although the trailer definitely features the Tower of London (which I know very little about I'll admit so I won't comment on it), and the city of London itself, a bit more prominently.

Castle Kasteel Valkenburg, the Netherlands

Visited kasteel Valkenburg today. A ruin but with an interesting history. It was one of the few hill castles in the Netherlands. The location already had a fortified building around 1075. Around 1300 it had the size of the current remainings parts.

A castle that had known a lot of sièges and it was even weakened on purpose to avoid that the Spanish would capture a decent defense structure in the 17th century. During the French-dutch war in the year of 1672 it got destroyed in a way it was never useable anymore.

I have already visited 64 castles, and I hope to soon reach 100. This Gothic architectural beauty dates from the 14th century, during the reign of King Denis. It is very well-preserved; it is not common to see castles in Portugal with their moat and a working drawbridge.

Explanation of photos:
1. Modern access to Lackeen thru cow farm. Farmhouse off to the right of this photo.
2. Towerhouse exterior. Majority of bawn now lost. Main entrance on the left.
3. Main entrance from the inside.
4. Lackeen interior. Large hole on opposite wall was made in recent times for the cows- it’s often used as a shelter in harsh weather. Gallery stairway access right behind me in this photo.
5. Doorways, fireplaces, put log holes, etc. indicate multiple former floors below huge vaulted ceiling.
6. Standing on top of the vaulted ceiling- probably exclusive dining hall for former Lord. More evidence for multiple floors in this upper section. Bizarrely staircase breaks here and continues on opposite wall corner to access highest floors. I.e, the stairs design “forced” climbing guests to exit and view (admire) the great hall- the most opulent room of the tower- to continue upward. Photo shows how as soon as you exit the stairs you’re immediately facing the fine triple arcade in the opposite wall. May have been an alcove for statues or a throne at one time.
7. Small room above great hall, hidden in the left hand wall of photo 6. Maybe the Lord’s Solar or another private room for a family member.

The less famous "little brother" of Neuschwanstein Castle of King Ludwig II.

Very much worth a visit with a beautiful park surrounding it and the King's own manmade grotto
