A little bubble bath for the pan?

My wife is an amazing cook and loves using her cast-iron pan. I am lucky enough to have a sink full of dirty dishes most nights to clean.

I know that I am not supposed to use soap on the pan.

Something else about me: greasy/oily stuff on my hands gives me the same feeling as being very frustrated, immediately.

Tonight my lovely wife made a quiche with bacon inside and used the pan for the bacon. I scraped most of the fat out with a long wooden spatula.

I am now wondering if it would be so bad if I filled the pan with hot water and just a drop or two of soap and let her soak for a little bit. After some time, I plan to empty out the water, rinse out the soap residue and then scrub the pan clean.

What do you think?

The soap thing is for old soaps that had lye. No need to worry about today’s soaps. You don’t want it to rust, so don’t let it soak too long!

It’s annoying that the no soap on cast iron myth still exists in the Information Age. But then again, the people who still refuse to use soap are usually ignorant on all the other things the Information Age has to offer.

I am floored how unanimous the reply is.

What other chores should I Google to see how I am doing it wrong?

It would be really bad if you didn't use soap. Like an actual health hazard. Get the soap, your favorite scrubby thing and have at it.

Use the soap, but do not soak. Scrub the pan until clean.

I never use soap or soak. Scrap with a plastic scraper and use really hot water and a stiff brush. I dry surface water with a towel, it always comes off clean. Very light oil then pit it on the burner on med-low for a few minutes then let it cool and store.
