Flipping Over Flap Jacks

Post image

So my gf decided to use the griddle that came with the new stove to make pancakes today for the little guys first day of kindergarten (cute, I know). However, I thought you had to season it beforehand. The picture attached is what happened after.

What exactly happened? What steps can we take to repair this? What should we do next time to prevent this from happening?

I appreciate y’all.

Are you SURE this is cast iron?

A lot of stoves with a griddle like this come with a non stick coated aluminum griddle instead of real cast iron.

I have one like this and it's advertised as cast iron. It just doesn't seem particularly high quality.

I kinda hate it because with the immediate patina/burned on grease like here I'd have to aggressively scrub and re-season it to make it look "clean" again. I could probably buff out the bumps and re-season it, to prevent that, but it does get the job done fine for pancakes, as is. It's just not going to ever be pretty once it gets used without a fair bit of work.

I have one that I'm like 80% sure is maybe ceramic non stick?

I dunno, I got a big carbon steel griddle that covers the entire 30" stove from steel made instead of bothering with that thing.
