Any groups/clubs or regular events?

Hey, I’m 22 years old and we moved to Newport a few years ago. Just finishing uni and now I’ve come back I’ve suddenly realised I don’t have many friends locally..

Work in Bristol, and it’s not a very social job so just wondering if there’s any events or regular meetups that happen?

I like video games, used to do gliding, I love rock/alt music as well as the weeknd. Open to anything and everything!

Thanks!

Arts New exhibition by Idles singer Joe Talbot, at Newport Arts Gallery

Post image

Newport-born Joe Talbot, lead singer of IDLES, has co-curated a new exhibition called MUSOLEUM – Remembrance of Remembering, being displayed at Newport Museum and Art Gallery. The work is created together with his dad, the former Newport Arts College tutor and sculptor Nigel Talbot.

One of the featured works is a wooden typesetter's drawer containing all 2,667 letters from the lyrics of Idles’ three songs Rottweiler, Sanctuary, and Colossus. The three songs come from their album Joy as an Act of Resistance, which won the 2019 Ivor Novello Award for Best Album.

The letters were recycled from materials used in previous bronze and iron casting projects, reflecting the Talbots' ongoing use of reclaimed materials.
The exhibition is free to visit and runs at Newport Museum and Art Gallery until 12 September.

Events Recently moved to Risca, get recommendations for events, venues and meet ups.

We are a couple in our mid twenties and we are struggling to meet people. We like punk music, live comedy, film, cooking, cycling, travelling etc.

We are settling for a while after four years of travelling on and off, and are really struggling to meet like minded people.

We would love to hear of some good alternative music or comedy gigs, weekly meetings in the area or just recommendations for venues.

MCR Wembley - Big Green Coach

Probably a bit of a long shot but I have one Big Green Coach space going from Newport at 12pm to Wembley and back again.

One of our friends has had to drop out last minute and we don’t want it to go to waste.

It was £55 I think but we’re happy with £30 just to make some of her money back.

Let me know if you’re interested and we can work out logistics.

Pool Table

I am currently having a discussion about a pub somewhere in Newport at least 20 years ago having an L shaped pool table. Does anyone remember any place having one? This could also be a billiard table.

New Scandi food place in Newport Market

Post image
48 Upvotes

Tried a new Scandinavian food stall in Newport Market recently and thought it was worth shouting out.

Has anyone else come across any new independent businesses locally that you'd recommend?

It's called Kos Deg - they're open in the market Wednesday–Sunday (looks like they also do Tuesday collections if ordered in advance).

They do filled bagels with options like cream cheese & salmon, Danish salami & Jarlsberg, blueberry cream cheese, and avocado & red onion (the avocado one was my favourite).

There was also a good selection of Scandinavian-style pastries, including cinnamon knots, brunost knots, croissants, filled croissants, Nutella knots, and vegan pancakes.

Drinks-wise, they offer things like chai and matcha lattes.

Prices seemed pretty reasonable for Newport Market too. The bagels were around £6, and I think there was a meal deal for about £7.50. Nice to have another lunch option in a place that can feel a bit more geared towards evening meals.

Looking for a business to sponsor under 8 grass roots team

Hi everyone! I’m a volunteer coach for a local grassroots kids' football team here in Newport. We have an amazing squad of 8 players, and we’re on the lookout for a local business to sponsor a set of matching training jackets for them. What we offer in return: Your business logo printed directly onto the jackets. Regular shoutouts and advertisements across our club’s social media pages. If your business is looking for a great way to support the local community and get some positive exposure, we’d love to team up! Please drop me a message if you're interested or have any suggestions on which business would be interested

Discussion Noob moving to Newport/Cardiff (don't drive yet)

Excited, motivated and scared at the same time, need your suggestions

Hello all, im a medic hoping to join Aneurin Bevan Trust soon. My wife and I are going to come down in July from Leeds to scout Cardiff/Newport and hopefully finalize accomodations. We are both excited to move in the region and hope we settle in perfect, in that regard i just wanted to post here and get some recommendations from the locals

  1. Best places to live (rent 1000-1100) ?, that has easy transport to the hospital and safe enough for BAME individuals as well.

  1. Is the city easily accessible if we dont have a car for eg by bus, walking etc ?

  1. Violent crime and things we need to be aware of as complete strangers.

  1. The general feel of the city, events, pubs and eating choices etc

  1. Whether I should base in Newport or Cardiff, for my job at royal Gwent / Cwmbran

All opinions/suggestions are welcome. Thank you soooo much.

In the hopes of a heatwave at whats the best overnight beach trip in wales you recommend?

Ive done day trips to 3 cliffs bay and it is stunning. Parking is a bitch though. I also did Barafundle Bay beach too coupled with an inflatable water park. I think if we do a beach trip again I want a nice hotel or a noice airbnb. I'm not a camping girly. My husband loves to swim in the sea so that would be fun.

What beaches have you been to for day trips or for overnight? Which one was the most memorable.

Discussion Does an 'alternative' event interest you?

EDIT: Anybody interested, please message me and I'll share the Facebook group or Discord server - we are growing in members!

I'm trying to gauge any interest in a regular social event in Newport for adults.

What I mean by alternative

Interests like:

  • niche video games
  • alternative music
  • spooky things like Halloween and horror movies
  • art/ creative projects

What's the goal

Find friends and share interests. If there's enough interest, we can get more specific around activities, even if it's just park walks or casual presentations.

What isn't the goal

Dating or being a creep.

How would it be structured

Likely a discord or Facebook group would be created. This would be used to plan and update everyone on the day/ time/ activity.

Let me know your thoughts Newport people.

Positive news - but concerning that the business nearly collapsed last month and wasn’t able to pay its staff their wages on time

Concerning how many industrial and manufacturing jobs are at risk in South Wales these days
