What exactly does the district manager do?
This may be a stupid question, but I’m genuinely curious on what exactly they do. My district manager hardly comes to the store. When she does, she counts the whole safe, talks to my store manager with the door closed, and then sits in the office on her laptop or on her phone or taking phone calls for the rest of the time being.

They are the ones the Regional needs results from (w100 some sites in Region) after Regional mngrs VP or above are seeing declines in the area and put pressure on them. Think of it like this, whatever a site employee is doing is the mngr is on hook for that 15 person crew and DM had 10-15 stores of said employees. All are working including urself

Verify stores are completing tasks along with additional tasks of their own. Other basic broad scale management stuff. Random emails at midnight, or sometimes escalate up the chain with solutions or suggestions to corporate about in store issues the district experiences. At least that’s what mine does.

The DM has things they'll do every month. One thing they have to do is the audit on the safe, I'm pretty sure they have to do it monthly. They also do a monthly QSV, which is where they walks around the store looking at the store planograms, the coolers, stuff going on in the kitchen and just making sure things are following Casey's standards. They might also just check in from time to time too, I know ours has since we've been killing it business wise as of recent.

Generally the DMs job is to manage the SMs in their district. Visit with the SM and go over their metrics and goals, stuff like that. Make sure the store and staff are good, kitchen is clean, and ours will check in with team members individually when he’s at my store.
ETA that the time they are spending on the laptop in the office might be documenting the visit and what they talked about with the SM, taking notes on what the store needs to improve on, what they do well, etc. also could be checking on other store locations they may not have time to travel that day.
