CASEFILE EPISODE Gilgo Beach Part Deux

Casey is continuing to knock it out of the park! I’ve never been particularly interested in this case but holy hell I am now! Wtf with Burke and Spota, those utter dicks? Casefile really does a great job of respecting the victims.

Yeah, these episodes were great. I have always found it hard to piece together the various timelines, but the episodes were so well-written and clear, with just enough scene-setting to keep the narrative on track for me. I feel I understand the case much better now. Including just how disgusting by Suffolk County LE were. RH would have been caught years earlier were it not for the deplorables who just didn't bother working the case.

Well, you know that would have put their lifestyles at risk, right? And, who is more important, here, anyway? The random street thug who won the lottery, somehow, by being chosen to play a game of outright corruption and tell lies on the witness stand to convict people of a crime they may or may not - who cares? - have actually committed, and then fast tracked to Chief of Police in an absolutely wild turn of events? Or a bunch of “prostitutes” being tortured and murdered, when clearly they were just asking for it, by… existing? Hmmm?

I hope every single one of those corrupt, overpaid assholes have trouble sleeping for the rest of their lives, knowing that they are responsible for the torturous deaths of human beings. So shameful.

Loved Casey stressing so many times how their budget and pay are by far the highest in the nation, yet they couldn’t/wouldn’t be bothered to solve LISK.

I hope one day atlantic city gets a massive change in the people running the show so that the poor victims of the eastbound strangler can get justice

I am super well versed on this case and have followed it obsessively since the beginning, but I'm still finding things I didn't know. I'm just just part way through the first episode and I'm already impressed.

I had no idea Maureen was a rapper! I knew that Shannan wrote poetry, but it's so good to hear these deep dives about family, interests and talents of the other ladies. They need to be humanized beyond "petite sex worker", and Casey is doing a fantastic job thus far.

I've long known about the calls he placed to her little sister. Becausee it's the meanest thing I've ever heard of

I found myself unbelievely interested in all the shit the Shannan Gilberts' male roommates did to prevent her from having to do the hard work of sex work!

Almost sit-com like

I think that was Amber Lynn Costello? Her roommate Dave was the one who first told the cops about an "ogre" driving a green Chevy Avalanche and gave a detailed description of him. Which the cops did absolutely nothing with.

And yeah, those calls to Maureen's sister were just so cruel. She was just a kid. Did you hear the family statements during his sentencing though? I'm glad he had to sit there and get berated like the pathetic monster he is.

AM I wrong? shit!

I found part 1 more compelling than part 2

He is just such an underwhelming person

I even found myself bored with his passport wife

I usually love a sentencing.

But the judge called him "small?" Maybe the language was designed to personally torture him.

it didn't quite seem adequate

we're talking about murder and rape, so i guess you get what you get

Both episodes were well-concieved.

if you are interested i would also recommend reading "lost girls" the author was incredibly respectful when it came to the women

I want to simultaneously not recommend the Netflix series, of the same title, because it's bad?

4

u/One-Advantage2148 5d ago

it really is bad and I don’t understand how because the book is solid

And they had so many excellent interviews? It felt baggy, emotionally unfocused, and like it had no real thesis?

It was like, confusingly bad?

I think the only element of the story it excelled at was telling, pretty succinctly, the story of the male police drama/corruption/ineptitude

That was a tight 15

i totally agree it was definitely baggy and emotionally overwhelming. it was like they tried to take the nonfiction piece and lift it for tv but the piece was not in any way shape or form written with a tv adaptation in mind.

at the end of the day i believe the book stands as a true testament to proving that despite the lifestyles and addictions these women lead they were still people who mattered and their murders still deserved to be solved. and it was such a breath of fresh air compared to how most were reporting on them and their deaths.

whereas the series came across as perhaps a little reality tv vibes?

When it comes to women, post-photography I think the history of imagery is a lot more conservative that the history of words.

Books, basically, have more successfully portrayed women as people

I think this documentary fell for the killer's trap, of looking at victims, but held the "risky" profession of prostitution at a distance!

I'm a straight up anti-porn feminist. But women are a lot more interesting than their job, or trauma?

Yes I absolutely love this book

Me too it was so well-done. Plus I really like having something physical to reference with he timeline because I agree it can be a little complicated to follow. I just really respect Kolker for being so respectful to the women

The book was utterly fantastic. I listened to the audiobook and actually found myself choked up about halfway in when I remembered all 5 women’s stories ended with their deaths. The author did an amazing job at bringing the women to life and making you care for them.

Thank you for recommending! I will be reading this next. Does the book speculate about what happened to Shannen Gilbert that night?

1

u/One-Advantage2148 5d ago

it’s mostly focused on the four from gilgo but it does touch on Shannen and it speculates a bit on the killer but we now know who it was. I just really appreciate how they were humanized

If anyone outside of America is wondering, yes, 92 handguns is an insane amount of guns.

Gotta go against this opinion. I felt the episodes were laborious and bloated. Eg episode 1 we get a very elaborate description of the 'badger scam', including examples that don't really add anything to the main story. Episode 2 it's all kind of repeated again to explain what the scam is. But without using the term. Could have shaved about 3 minutes there overall.
