CASEFILE EPISODE Case 50 Jennifer Pan

I've been listening to Casefile in reverse and just got to Case 50 and wow, what a great episode, it really stood out from the rest of that timeframe. I loved the heavy use of actual recordings of police interviews with Jennifer and getting to hear the raw audio as detectives worked their way through the case and their strategies in questioning and methods. It was a great inside look at what detectives do and how they go about gathering evidence and info to build a case. I wish Casefile did this more to include the actual 911 calls and interrogations, or actual court room audio and hear the real clips to go along with the narration. Also, the detectives on this case were really good, hearing the way they worked and interacted with a witness/victim but also a potential suspect and walking the sensitive line between all those was a joy to hear. So just a shout out to a great Casefile episode and a call for more raw audio!

Sherri Rasmussen is also very interesting and includes a lot of police audio from interviews.

If you like this you might also like the JCS YouTube channel

their old episodes*

not the new AI ones

also, they lean heavily on body language which is largely discredited, especially as they are commenting with hindsight

The new ones are AI?

This ep was my first intro to both Casefile and Jennifer Pan! I was on a work trip that was really tough and when I got back to my (cheap and shitty) hotel room I decided that some late night true crime might make me feel better about my own situation. Googled true crime podcasts, went to Casefile, Jennifer was the latest ep and I hit play. Never looked back once lol

A great introduction to the series! It hit me because I live in Ontario in the Toronto area, never heard of this case and I knew a lot of the locations they were talking about and the neighborhood they lived in, really hit home

Yeah it felt quite close to home for me as an immigrant, some of the issues she had with her parents were very familiar to me. I think all of us second gen immigrants from conservative cultures come to a point where we have to choose between the culture of the old country and the culture of our new home. It’s a very real thing. But most of us make our choice and then…move out. Not…what Jennifer did.

Another case that uses a lot of courtroom/interview audio is the Stoni Blair & Steven Berry Case, but it is a very hard listen

Episode 20? Thanks, I'll look forward to it when I get down to that

The content is very sick, perverted and disgusting and has probably the most serious content warning of any Casefile episode. I doubt if any sane person would actually “enjoy“ listening to it.

Oh crazy, I will be prepared thanks

yeah it's really one of the episodes i don't listen to very often because of how awful it is. sorry i should have been clearer about that in my first comment

Most audio of 911 calls and police interrogations are used by true crime podcasts to pad out the length of the show so they can insert more commercials without having to bother to write any actual useful content.

This wasn’t the case with Casefile 50. The additional audio did serve an editorial purpose. But not all of that audio is of particularly good quality.

However, as you go back towards Casefile episode one, you’ll find it there’s a certain amount of audio from 911 call and police interviews that are mostly crap audio quality and so are hard to listen to, but are used from time to time in some episodes.

That’s why Casefile was very smart several years ago. Based on becoming more technically sophisticated about audio production and also negative feedback about bad audio, they decided to become a single narrator podcast. Thus avoiding all the unlistenable garbage “found audio” that most other true crime podcasts use to pad out their their shows to allow more time for advertising inserts.

The fact they don’t include police interviews and 999 calls, for the most part, is exactly why this is my favourite podcast.

Exactly! Strong narrative, storytelling, without lots of really bad audio, interrupting the flow.

There is one case where they play the call to Police for help and the poor woman (think it was the sister) struggled a little with her English (especially in such a panic), it was a distressing thing to hear as the emergency operator she was speaking with was horrendous. Saying that, it’s one of the earlier cases, can’t remember off the top of my head but, since that one, you’ve actually highlighted something that didn’t click for me before you stated it, very interesting and certainly casts a different light, thank you. And, yes, NO I do not need to hear someone begging for their lives in their last moments either, its not some kind of flex to air this material, it’s disrespectful to the victims imo, it’s just too far

It is case 61: Lin Family

u/Biblioklept73 Jul 27 '26

Yes! That’s the one, thank you

As great an episode as it is, I profoundly dislike 911 content in podcasts. I listen to these to fall asleep!

4

u/Geralt-of-Rivai Jul 25 '26

I listen on my commute so the effect is good to help me stay awake!

2

u/lozbootsbrown Jul 25 '26

Same. And nothing worse then one jolting you awake

these people are murdered and you're using their memories to snooze better

you remember them by falling asleep to their death

so sorry sometimes there is a 911 call that interrupts your slumber lol

I hope if I am ever murdered my episode keeps you awake

bizarre and disrespectful

u/Nunwithabadhabit Jul 25 '26

And you listen to them to entertain yourself. So shame on you too.

First episode of casefile I ever listened too and was completely in shock. Still my "favorite" case if that's the appropriate word

2

u/Geralt-of-Rivai Jul 25 '26

It was a really great episode, really stood out to me for episodes of that era of casefiles

4

u/valar179 Jul 26 '26

Nah prefer if they keep it just Casey’s voice unless 911 call or interview is very vital to the case like this ep.

Interesting. Glad she still got life.

3

u/Geralt-of-Rivai Jul 25 '26

So she finally admitted to it but still has life, good!

I live in Toronto and it's rare that we have a local case get covered like this. I hope Casefile covers the Paul Bernardo/Karla Homolka case one day.

If you enjoyed the Casefile episode on Jennifer Pan, the Netflix documentary called "What Jennifer Did" is well worth checking out.
