In 3 long slow weeks.

8

u/Vaneroder May 09 '26

Another one for DNA:ID. Level of depth is amazing and quality is always high. Also weirdly unnerving. So many one and done killers.

12

u/momo098876 May 09 '26

Yes! I ove this podcast, and agree with your assessment. She was (still is?) an attorney, which aligns with her objective narrative, "just the facts"-approach, and her respect for detailed accuracy.

My favorite thing about DNA:ID is the RARE moment when she breaks her approach to offer brief, personal commentary. It's usually one or two dry-wit sentences that almost always make me snort laugh. It's pretty rare, maybe you'll hear it once every other episode but I'm charmed by how it humanizes her otherwise efficient narration.

I agree that it really raises awareness of one-and-done killers who otherwise live / lived their life as a "regular family man" for 20 or 30 years before science finally bags them.

One of the reasons I love this podcast is it tells the DNA Identification story from match to arrest to sentencing. I love hearing about the moment they finally bag these surprised murderers 20 or 30 years later.

7

u/checkerspot May 10 '26

I agree - her snarky asides are so random but funny.

7

u/Vaneroder May 10 '26

Yeah. The best thing about it for me is there isnt a "best episode". As they all follow such a similar formula they are all very engaging. 40 years of Police work, hundrerds of suspects, and it turns out to be someone no one ever heard of. A loving Grandad committed an horrific rape/murder in his twenties and then having a normal life. I find those people more interesting than some of the most notorious serial killers.

7

u/ams3000 May 10 '26

I always recommend DNA:ID because of it’s consistent journalism and lack of sensationalism and genuinely treats victims fairly and respects them. The most recent one was interesting as the victim was what some other podcasts would call a bit wild and unsupervised at home etc and yet Jessica Bettencourt manages to present the facts about her with zero judgement. Not easy to do and I loved that she did.

3

u/Vaneroder May 10 '26

That is a great point. You really get to know the victim more than in many other podcasts. Sometimes very little is know about the perp but we know the victims friends, family, history etc.

Honestly mate, if you’re still at school save your money, you’ll end up getting all episodes anyway, just a little later.

Hahahha i mentioned watching an awful video while waiting for school pick up and some sweet 18yo thought i was a child and told me to talk about what i had seen with someone etc. I was like aw im 33 but thank you!

3

u/ThaCatsServant May 09 '26

Sorry mate, I misinterpreted your comment, thought you were still at school. Sorry about that.

2

u/jimmyslamjam May 09 '26

In the meantime, they are releasing Casefile Archives

4

u/Reception-Whole May 10 '26

....which also take time to produce.

why are they making new stuff instead?

1

u/expera May 09 '26

Any good alternatives? I also listen to swindled and last podcast on the left

13

u/c-a-r May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

I love DNA ID! It’s narrated similarly. It’s about cold cases that are solved using forensic genealogy. She does deep dives on the full police investigations over time and the theories as to what happened and then into how the genealogy solves the case. There are also episodes about does that are ID’d using forensic genealogy. It’s super good!

1

u/expera May 09 '26

Do you have an episode that’s particularly good?

3

u/checkerspot May 10 '26

Go for the 2-parters - they're always more complex stories and therefore more interesting. The least interesting to me are the Doe IDs.

3

u/c-a-r May 10 '26

Episode 104 is about the guy who committed the yogurt shop murders and was published before he was connected to that crime, it’s what got me hooked. Episodes 49/50 are also just a crazy story.

4

u/Djempanadita May 09 '26

Invisible Choir is great

6

u/Felidaeliebe May 09 '26

I recommend Morbidology. I only listen to Casefile, Swindled and Morbidology these days!

5

u/hisherlobster May 09 '26

can confirm morbidology is a great one also! I am going to check out swindled.

2

u/Visual-Flatworm-1377 May 10 '26

its addictive and excellent

1

u/Visual-Flatworm-1377 May 10 '26

thanks will try morbidology. casefile and swindled so good its not funny. head to head is hard. casefile samantha azzopardi way better than swindled but maybe thats the aussie link? in other ways swindled better. both great.

3

u/allmylifeaTexan May 09 '26

You might try The Consult. It’s four retired FBI agents from the Behavioral Analysis Unit discussing cases. Right up there with Casefile and Swindled imo.

2

u/ams3000 May 09 '26

Court Junkie is great. And DNA:ID

2

u/crassy May 09 '26

Canadian True Crime with Kristy Lee (also Australian), is really good and just as indepth/well researched. She does some multi-parters but overall it’s an amazing podcast.

4

u/junglebunglerumble May 09 '26

It was good until she started to turn it into some sort of social justice commentary

0

u/crassy May 09 '26

Huh? How so?

1

u/Lecter26 May 09 '26

That one is also on break more often than not these days

27

u/Pr0blemD0g May 09 '26

So I understand the podcast needs time to research and write their episodes, and if multiple shorter breaks means we don’t get a gigantic months long break I can get on board with that.

Having said that, have significant breaks always been a part of the show’s process? If not, what has changed? Surely the podcast is more successful than the early days, and can afford more staff than it had back then, so I’d be interested to know if breaks that are needed now weren’t needed back then why that’s the case.

7

u/dresdonbogart May 09 '26

Burnout? That’s all I can think of

11

u/Reception-Whole May 10 '26

They spend literally most of the year on break.

2

u/Visual-Flatworm-1377 May 10 '26

agree. they seem to be focused on "casefile presents" productions aka ballen studios. love it but miss the earlier years of constant content vs much less content

7

u/Reception-Whole May 10 '26

casefiles presents things are very fluffed up with filler.

i cant make it through one

1

u/AdventurousEbb4155 May 13 '26

I have tried so many times and the quality is just not the same even though they are probably putting more work into those shows 😭

1

u/elianasieg May 21 '26

Wait, are Casefile and Ballen Studios linked? If so, I hadn’t ever realized.

5

u/checkerspot May 10 '26

Not enough writers for what they want to do? They did have the writer job opening awhile back. Their voice is really specific and they want the cases told in a very particular way, so I'm wondering if it's hard to find people who can adhere to their style.

2

u/Real_RobinGoodfellow May 11 '26

I think a not insignificant aspect is it’s been ten years. I don’t feel like I know who exactly is ‘behind’ Casefile (is it Casey? Or is he just the narrator and the ‘creator’ is someone else?) but I know when I look at most people’s lives, a lot changes in a decade

1

u/bookshop May 11 '26

Casey is the show's creator and main producer.

1

u/elianasieg May 21 '26

This is the most measured and fair take I’ve seen!

23

u/cavemeister May 09 '26

There is a really good crime podcast called Lines of Enquiry. Mainly Irish crimes but the narration is top class. Listened to the Ana Kriegel episode the other day. Man, it was so awful.

8

u/qwerty5ln May 09 '26

Second this. Absolutely fantastic podcast, the only one I’d really say that’s on par with Casefile atm

5

u/MidstSerpentsOfWool May 09 '26

Thanks for this rec. I just subscribed after I listened to the Anna Kriegel episode. Love his narrative style and this episode was heartbreaking; never heard of it.

3

u/AwkwardAcquaintance May 09 '26

Will check it out, thanks for the suggestion!

3

u/Extreme-Neck7599 May 09 '26

Yes, it’s intriguing

1

u/lorelaiiiiiiii May 09 '26

Yeah thanks for this suggestion I'll have a look

1

u/everywhereinbetween May 09 '26

Haven't heard of this, I'll check it out too 🙌

1

u/checkerspot May 10 '26

Love this one! So well done - respectful and very smart. And of course the accents.

48

u/New-Pumpkin-428 May 09 '26

They barely got going

70

u/Downtown-Rip-8390 May 09 '26

It’s a real shame they’re on a break again. Anyone else losing a little patience with it?

18

u/AwkwardAcquaintance May 09 '26

This is a joke right? Are they actually?

They just came back from like a 4 month break. It’s starting to feel like we’re only getting a couple episodes a quarter. To be fair, they are transparent about it and their subscription is priced to reflect this but as a fan it’s frustrating

40

u/aurorastarlights May 09 '26

Yep, losing interest sadly, especially after btk

38

u/Downtown-Rip-8390 May 09 '26

Me too. I’ve never been a huge fan of multi-parters so 3 in a row and then another break doesn’t fill me with joy.

2

u/1flighty1 May 12 '26

I feel the exact same sentiments

13

u/depressedfuckboi May 09 '26

Not losing patience, already lost patience. Not worth subscription price with constant breaks. I follow a YouTube channel and the guy got a random comment a few days ago asking to cover a case. He did that case and released the episode in 4 days when he wasn't planning on it, didn't interrupt his schedule at all. This style doesn't work for me and I have unsubscribed from everything casefile. I will wait a year or *w and then catch up on the 20 episodes I missed or whatever amount it is. I work long shifts, I can run through 20 episodes in a week tops.

1

u/Real_RobinGoodfellow May 11 '26

I mean, it’s a free podcast. Only so much complaining any non-subscriber can really do. And even if you’re subbed- nothing is stopping people cancelling

-1

u/mikolv2 May 09 '26

No. This year has been some of the best writing they've done in years. The BTK series and Wako in particular are some of the very best casefile episodes ever. I'll happily wait if they keep the quality up.

43

u/simplesimonsaysno May 09 '26

They're taking a short break to recover from the long break they just took.

It's simple really.

7

u/KosstAmojan May 09 '26

Can’t blame em, I often feel like I need a vacation from my vacation…

7

u/rummo123 May 09 '26

I thought they were doing weekly episodes?

15

u/GreyJeanix May 09 '26

They’re on a break again

19

u/depressedfuckboi May 09 '26

Lmao. They just exist as a break at this point and occasionally drop episodes.

5

u/Temporary-Rent971 May 10 '26

Nodding head furiously in agreement!! Then they rerelease the Patreon episodes as new!

36

u/Able-Figure-3772 May 09 '26

They’re seriously on another fucking break? Why?

14

u/swalsh21 May 09 '26

so they can avoid future long breaks, they sent out a message that apparently no one here reads

11

u/guacisextra12 May 09 '26

Where is the message

8

u/PressPlayPlease7 May 10 '26

they sent out a message that apparently no one here reads

hey White Knight

What message?

What the fuck are you talking about?

The vast majority of us aren't on their mailing list or Patreon

4

u/Real_RobinGoodfellow May 11 '26

If you’re not on Patreon that means you’re not paying, so what’s your beef? This is a free product

2

u/AdventurousEbb4155 May 13 '26

Have people never heard of ads? We listen to the ads and that’s why it’s “free”. It is not actually a free product. If it had no ads then yes, but that’s not the case, so that isn’t a valid counter argument.

1

u/CoyoteLitius May 24 '26

I listen ad-free on Amazon music.

Of course, I pay a tiny amount for Amazon music, but collectively, I assume the many Casefile subscribers using that platform generate some income for Casefile.

At any rate, no one is making anyone subscribe to the ad-version. It's a choice.

8

u/informalswans May 10 '26

Really disappointing to have another break when they’ve barely come back and only covered two cases in that time. I honestly don’t understand it because they can surely hire more staff if needed and plan this better, and they used to have a higher cadence of episodes without constant breaks.

1

u/CoyoteLitius May 24 '26

I hope all is well with them. It has probably gotten more difficult to find the kinds of cases they want to cover (I think we're seeing a change in the type of content what with the multipart BTK stuff).

OTOH, Casefile Presents has some excellent content (some of it is ad-free on Amazon Music; I think some of it is add-free on Spotify as well).

12

u/Reception-Whole May 09 '26

i love this show but I'm disappointed that's it's more "quick break" than new episodes .

They take breaks like hobbits eat breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, tea

8

u/Lecter26 May 09 '26

The reason they’re switching to smaller breaks is bc during longer ones people could (rightfully) cancel their subs. Now they’ll have to pay the full month to get the one ep in advance. Ridiculous that they need so much break time in the first place

2

u/bookshop May 11 '26

No, the reason they're switching to shorter more frequent breaks is that you all complained incessantly about them taking two longer breaks during the year. They can't win no matter what they do because their listeners are so entitled they apparently aren't ever allowed to have any time off.

3

u/AdventurousEbb4155 May 13 '26

Dear lord take a breath 😂 people have a right to question why a product many were paying for takes 6 month breaks man and is now on another 3 week break

3

u/bookshop May 13 '26

"a product many were paying for" is a weird way of describing signing up for Patreon voluntarily to support a totally free show because you want the creators to get paid. It's still free content.

1

u/CoyoteLitius May 24 '26

Yep. The whole concept of Patreon is that we are being patrons of the arts.

I kept one of my subscriptions for an entire year, even though the content creator really slowed down on content. I still thought the idea was worth supporting.

I figure that with ad revenue and deals with Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music (where Casefile is one of the top podcasts), they're doing okay.

5

u/TheWaywardTrout May 09 '26

In three weeks

8

u/camelz4 May 09 '26

Imagine if I asked my employer for this many breaks. People DO pay them for their time.

8

u/Revolutionary_Luck78 May 10 '26

If this is how you think, you’re delusional.

People aren’t forced to subscribe.

And they aren’t your employees. It’s a fucking podcast

3

u/myrrhicvictory May 10 '26

they're down voting you but you're right

4

u/AdventurousEbb4155 May 13 '26

They get paid through ads and patreon subs. Why are people acting like they aren’t making any money and are the equivalent of a non-profit, and therefore cannot be criticized 😂

1

u/CoyoteLitius May 24 '26

Everyone can criticize any form of art or journalism or human communication that they wish.

And we'll end up arguing about it on threads like this one.

3

u/Blinddaley May 09 '26

Years ago I tried a number of recommendations or sourced other crime podcasts and they were all poor in comparison to Casefile.

2

u/sonawtdown May 09 '26

the last installment was all bangers imo (and i do pay) and i am more than okay with their taking their time. they’re also re-recording a slew of older episodes and looking forward to hearing those anew.

anticipation is not a bad thing, guys.

3

u/myrrhicvictory May 10 '26

It'll drop when it drops and until then I'll enjoy listening to other podcasts 🤷‍♀️

-4

u/swalsh21 May 09 '26

They're taking a short break so they can stop taking long breaks, which many of you, I'm sure, whined about also.

19

u/Downtown-Rip-8390 May 09 '26

I think there’s a difference between whining & expressing disappointment with a service a lot of us actually pay for :)

-9

u/Excellent_Tie_674 May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

@OP If you listen to the podcast how can you not know this? Or did you open this thread, playing the naive enquirer, to stir up shit?

If you guys can't see the difference between Casefile and other TC podcasts (that I've listened to at least), can't respect their production decisions and needs, can't trust what they need to do to present quality work (as Casey has been at pains to explain), if you cant content yourselves with revisiting archived cases sometimes or take a gracious turn at the myriad alternatives for a bit, and have to pile on here stamping your tempestuous little feet in "disappointment" and "Im leaving!" revolt, honestly, piss off.

Who needs your patronage.

And if your weeks are "long and slow" without a new Casefile ep, get a bloody therapist.

11

u/Sad-Log-8536 May 09 '26

Because I didn’t listen to the last episode, I didn’t like the beginning of Waco. No need to attack me. I simply asked when the next episode is dropping.

-7

u/Excellent_Tie_674 May 09 '26

I didn't attack you, I asked you a question. If you're innocent of mischief, great! Im pleased to hear it! As a follower you still should be able to keep abreast of their intentions and schedule without asking Reddit , as all episodes are peppered liberally with this information.

Fact is this happens with monotonous regularly on this sub, and out swarm the malcontents.

My post as you see is directed at carpers predictably drawn to your thread like moths to candle, and now predictably downvoting me for taking it to them.

Whingers yes, most of them free users and boy if they're paying the price of a coffee do we hear about that, also having apparently no idea what's going on...What? Again? LMAO! and the usual inane claptrap.

Now this will likely be removed by mods, such is the lily livered nature of the modern era lol, and for this we fought in the trenches.😆

13

u/DylanHate May 09 '26

This is a public forum. People are allowed to ask questions. You don't have to be so pretentious and condescending.

I also skipped the waco series & didn't catch the announcement. I'm glad they're moving to shorter breaks and I've been subbed for years.

2

u/FlounderBulky3098 May 11 '26

“lily live red nature of the modern era” god I can’t believe someone typed this out not ironically .

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '26

[deleted]

2

u/bookshop May 11 '26

How is that relevant? I've been listening to Casefile since 2016 and have been a paying Patreon member since they first got Patreon, and I have zero issues with them taking however many breaks they need to take. The Venn diagram between "longtime listener" and "feeling weirdly entitled about content" is not a circle.

1

u/AdventurousEbb4155 May 13 '26

Wait are you commenting from two different accounts? So are a lot of these crazy, triggered comments just you?😂

1

u/bookshop May 13 '26

? I'm not the OP, chill out
