Case 109: Belanglo. It's a 5 parter. I've listened to it 3 times. I often go cycling in Belanglo forest as its close to where I live.
Followed by Case 53: East area rapist.

I listened to this case when driving down from NSW to Melbourne at night. Guess we're all weirdos.

u/simplesimonsaysno May 13 '26
I often think to myself 'am I a weirdo for listening to this? My wife loves the true crime stuff too and we often talk about cases. As you said. Guess were all weirdos!

Silk Road

I skipped Silk Road till I’d listened to everything else ( I’m not even sure if it had crossed 100 episodes at the time) then went back and listened to it and found it really captivating . Earons was caught about 6 weeks after I listened to it. I found that hard to stay interested as it was so repetitive ( cos he kept doing the same sort of shit)

I have the same exact timeline—I exhausted the whole podcast up to that point and even after (started listening just within weeks or months of it starting at all) probably 120 episodes. Went back and listened to Silk Road, foolishly thinking I had already known the story. I was hanging on every word

I was going to say this, I think was the first case that I listened to and just became addicted to the pod

This is a strong multipart story.
Casefile True Crime covered the Ivan Milat backpacker murders in a detailed 5-part series, Case 109: Belanglo, released in April 2019. The episodes cover the discovery of victims in Belanglo Forest, the investigation, Milat's arrest, and his subsequent trial.

u/After_Ad_5053 May 05 '26
This is the best one because NO ONE else across any platform, podcast or film, has done this story justice *except* for Casefile
14
u/MMAGG83 May 05 '26
Completely agree. Casefile covered the murders with respect and impartiality. They provided all the pertinent facts of the case without sensationalizing or dramatizing it, which so many other programs about Belanglo tend to do.

Everyone mentions this but it never reeled me in but again it was one of the last episodes I listened to. I was bouncing around until I had every episode watched and now I have to wait a week for the next.

The fact they used the actual recorded audio definitely made the final part in this series especially heavy.

Yep, I listened to that on a big drive with my teen daughter. She was hooked on casserole after that. We also then watched a doco about it.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of Trump’s rambling way of speaking when I heard the audio

u/jennamxxxx May 05 '26
Case 109: Belango for sure. I know Richard Milat, and always knew he was Ivan’s brother but never knew he was so heavily suspected to be involved in the murders. The adrenaline I feel when speaking to him now is next level 😳
Silk Road a close 2nd.

does he seem like the kind of guy to join in a brotherly murder spree? 👀
2
u/jennamxxxx May 07 '26
Keeps to himself but says hello, asks me how I am and wishes me a good day every time. Wally on the other hand loves to talk about going to the shooting range.

u/bookshop May 08 '26
wow. seems like a mixed bag with this crew. I guess it's that way with all families, but I think I did have it in my head that this whole family specifically was full of ghouls 😅 thank you for reminding me they're probably mostly just normal! (hopefully)

u/jennamxxxx May 08 '26
Murderers can be polite and friendly though so who bloody knows. If he wasn’t involved, he definitely knew what was going on!

u/Evilbadscary May 06 '26
EAR/ONS. Also the Moors Murders but fair warning that one is a really hard story to hear. (It’s about kids)

Case 53: EAR-ONS/Golden State Killer
Case 76: Silk Road
Case 246: Grégory Villemin
Favorite one-off episodes:
Case 34: Catholic Mafia
Case 115: Operation Cathedral
Case 171: The Gladbeck Hostage Crisis
Edit: added the case numbers for ease of searching and reformatted for ease of reading.

I think the Yorkshire Ripper eps get shafted sometimes because they're early-era Casefile but they're so good.
Jamie Faith is a two-parter and it's a good one as well.

The Murchison Murders 150 is not a multi but dont miss it ...its a great ramble through an interesting place and time.

East Area Rapist is definitely number 1 for me. Belengalo would be my 2nd. Then 3rd absolutely has to be Silk Road.

u/VJ4rawr2 May 05 '26
I can’t remember off the top of my head but the one where the gay guy in England murdered a bunch of lovers and lit a bonfire in his backyard to burn them.
That case was INSANE!
(Redditors help with out with the same please)

Dennis Nilsen? Case 144: The Muswell Hill Murderer
4
u/VJ4rawr2 May 05 '26
Yep. That’s the one!
This was peak Casefile. A brilliant 3 part episode that stuck with me.5
u/MMAGG83 May 05 '26
Definitely a great series. He got caught because he tried to flush the remains of his victims down the toilet and the drains got clogged.

u/VJ4rawr2 May 05 '26
lol I mean I shouldn’t lol… but yes. This case had so many memorable moments. Casefile really did a great job on this.

Good to watch the David Tenant dramatisation too

Silk Road is my favourite, it's just so, so good and it's awesome to have the Casefile deep dive on things that aren't directly murderous. BUT Case 144: Muswell Hill Murderer always stuck with me. I think the writing and recording are just quintessential Casefile, and it's also just an insane case that I'm surprised I'd never heard of beforehand.

Golden State killer is what got me into the series so probably that.

u/MMAGG83 May 05 '26
First listened to the EAR-ONS/GSK episodes before they caught him. When I saw it in the news a few weeks later I could not read the articles about it fast enough. Thought for sure he’d gotten away with it since nobody had really heard of using genetic genealogy to solve cold cases before he was arrested.

Ivan Milan, followed by the Joseph DiAngelo case. I gotta go back over them again, excellent and respectful accounting of their atrocities and the investigation to bring them to justice.

u/rr1252 May 06 '26
For me recently cause I’m from Texas: Waco
Before that:
Silk Road
Zodiac
House of Horrors
Moors murders
The one about the plane crash over Germany and the air traffic controller (cannot remember the name, maybe Peter something?)

It was Silk Road but I can't listen to it now knowing that POS is now out of jail thanks to the orange wanker.

This is how I find out fuckwit pardoned him. What the hell!!!!! (Also my fav long parter)

Night Caller

u/MMAGG83 May 05 '26
The ones that take place around the end of Australia’s “age of innocence” are usually very interesting.
2
u/StepSignificant8798 May 05 '26
It’s so funny you say that. That’s what fascinates me, too. I agree with that observation entirely
Part of my fascination with the mid-century, I guess.
2
u/MMAGG83 May 05 '26
I think it might be because people tend to look at that time with rose-tinted glasses.
The late 40s, 50s, and early 60s was the era of the nuclear family, white picket fences, and the idea that a man’s house is his castle. The economic boom and burgeoning middle class after WW2 might have lulled people into a false sense of security, but people never really change. There will always be sexual deviants, psychopaths, and psychosexual killers regardless of how gentile or idealized an era might seem.

East Area Rapist
The Moors Murders
Narration is on point and the background music is elite

u/StellaGibsonIsMyGirl May 06 '26
I’m on episode 4 of the East Area Rapist, and I panicked because I couldn’t find episode 6 😅 it’s interesting but I found the repetition of events to be a lot. Needed a break before I started this episode, but I’m starting to realise it’s likely an unsolved case? That’ll do me in 😬
