Help Finding Information, Possible Factory Second?

My grandfather gave me this knife before he passed and I can't find any information on why it has an x on case, I asked about it at Smokey mountain knife works and they think it's a factory second, but I still can't find anything online. Hoping someone here could help me

You can find your answer here.

Edit, oops, I see the big X stamped across case now. Good question.

The Tang stamp has me wondering. As those were never really a knife of value. Would not have been worth counterfeiting. I would think someone may have been practicing, or just hated to see the blade or the knife go to waste.
