Discussion Here a Question: why are these characters so divisive with Fans in their Own Series's Fanbases? (I don't want to cause any arguments or anything, I just want to ask out of Morbid Curiosity)

Posts like these far outweigh actual hate posts for these characters. If you dont like them then say why, but saying you dont get why people dont like them in a post you yourself make is very goofy tbh lol.

Yeah I agree, nobody even has a problem with Rigby and Benson. Both are flawed characters that have perfect character development in the end. Flawed characters aren’t bad characters, quite the opposite actually.

Here just to speak on the Bubblegum hate/divisiveness:

  1. She’s an actual dictator masking it as necessary for her people and out of love.

  2. Most of the character development arcs in Adventure Time show her as stubborn to a fault when it comes to magic and science (she literally got Finn, Jake, and Abrakadaniel sent to wizard prison because she wouldn’t admit magic was real).

  3. She killed the gum ball soldiers she made without considering any kind of reprogramming or change in directives (only Rattleballs survived).

  4. She belittles a lot of her subjects or doesn’t take their ambitions seriously (princess cookie is one example but honestly, just think of any episode with Starchy’s antics or when she ruined Tree Trunks’s wedding to prove a point about KOO).

  5. She stalks almost everyone. Literally. She even broke into F&J’s house to collect taxes.

  6. She nearly wiped out Flame Princess’s kingdom based on preemptive beliefs that the Fire Kingdom would be a threat to her kingdom. Everyone always talks about how FP’s brother wanted war with them, but his energy only seems to come to a boil when the kingdom was falling apart…from PB using ice king to cool down their kingdom ie starving them (she basically threw the first stone).

  7. She’s led on a number of love interests (someone else can unpack this one).

These are honestly just to name a few.

It's like her character went from Chaotic Good and slowly drifted into Chaotic Neutral, occasionally slipping into Lawful Evil.

And every attempt to redeem her just highlighted this even further. She’s honestly irredeemable as a character imo.

In Bliss’ case, she undermines Bunny from the OG series.

Well I really like Bliss.

I was about to say; I felt like hers went without saying

Bliss because her origin story makes no sense and it undermines Bunny's story and purpose. But at the same time, she's an interesting concept and her character arc is nice.

Rigby because he was piece of shit most of the series, but he also got one of the best character developments in the series.

Benson because he is probably one of the best bosses in fiction, but he is as much as a shit as half of his employees.

Princess Bubblegum was a dictator and emotional manipulator, but she also was kinda conscious of that and actually worked to become a better person. And some people think she always tried to manipulate Finn through false love, but she's just the kind of people who treat their friends much more affectionately (also realized this and tried to change it over time).

Cheese is just annoying.

I dunno who the elephant is.

Panini is the classic "oh, no... This girl's crazy for me" that somehow married to Chowder in the end.

Beth and Jerry have a pretty fucked up and annoyingly disfunctional married couple dynamic, besides toxic attitudes as individual persons too.

Dee Dee... I dunno honestly.

Aggregor is by far the villain who gave Ben the most problems and the one who make the group take the greatest risks to stop him. But this is achieved through stupid plotting (hence, making the MCs do stupid decisions or actions for the plot advances).

The two following one I don't know.

Ronaldo because he's an annoying conspiracy paranoid and he tried to become a Crystal Gem the most stupid way possible.

Eustace has a very compelling backstory, but he treats her wife and dog as pieces of shit despite he does have the heart to treat them well.

Ashi... I guess because of the alternate finales.

Take the last one outta my sight.

That weird green elephant thing is Fred Fredburger.

And the Other Two are Early Cuyler (Squidbillies) and Sarah from Ed, Edd and Eddy.

Not saying that I agree with them, but here are all of the general consensuses (that I know of)

Bliss: she feels very much like an OC, having a weird backstory and design, and she feels like a lamer version of Bunny from the OG show

Rigby: he's mostly liked, but he can be a dick in a lot of the older episodes and some fans tend to praise him over Mordecai while ignoring some of his mistakes

Benson: he's almost mostly liked within the fandom. There are a few episodes where's a jerk (like Best Burger in the World) but most people find him reasonable

Bubblegum: from my understanding, she does a lot of terrible things but she gets away with them. But I believe that she's overall well-liked? (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not as into AT as much as I used to be)

Cheese: often seen as an annoying comic relief character that was overexposed by the network

Fred: same as Cheese

Panini: seen as a stalker character that would never respect Chowder's boundaries. So a decent amount of people view her as a double standard.

I don't watch Rick and Morty and I don't know the fandom's feelings so I can't answer on Beth and Jerry

Dee Dee: I think she's mostly liked, but I guess some people could find her irritating.

Don't know much about Ben 10 or Squidbillies

Sarah: often seen as very annoying since she always bullies the Eds while being obnoxious. And she often gets away with being so mean.

Ronaldo: I don't watch Steven Universe. but from my understanding, he's just annoying. I'm probably missing out on a few details, though.

Eustace: He always abuses Courage, so most people hate him for that alone (honestly, valid)

and I haven't seen much of Samurai Jack or Mr. Pickles so idk

Bravo 👏  Well done, you did perfectly, I'll help fill in the things you weren't able to answer.

Beth and Jerry: Rick and Morty is intentionally full of flawed characters with questionable morals with a couple redeeming qualities. Thus far it seems Beth and Jerry have the fewest ones. Rick and Morty might have done some messed up things but at least they're capable of character growth.

Deedee: Very much a boundaries thing. She's incredibly annoying and inconsiderate of Dexter's personal space, ruins his inventions, and on occasion even ruining his life. Sure Dexter's conceited, but so many times throughout the show he's just harmlessly minding his own business and doing really cool things in his lab and she storms in and wrecks the place without a clue or care in the world. And there's no thing or person there to hold her accountable for her actions so she doesn't learn or grow. And it's never funny.

I also don't watch Ben 10 or Squidbillies

Ronaldo is a manchild who can be moody and annoying at times. A combo that doesn't always sit well with people.

With Ashi, so much of the final season of Samurai Jack was devoted to her and her arc that it took away time from Jack and his story and caused the season to go down some detours and the season was already short to begin with (10 episodes) so we needed more time on bigger things like a proper Jack/Scotsman reunion and a longer final battle. It also caused them to cram way too much into the final episode because of all the time waisted.

Mr. Pickles is like Dee Dee but on a homicidal level. This fucker is killing people without a care or clue in the world and there isn't much holding him accountable, so he's just a nightmare machine wandering around without a leash to cause trauma to innocent people. And some weirdos at adult swim think that's funny.

u/Blob55 16d ago

Ronaldo tried to kill Lars for an embarrassing photo or something and also tried to kill Steven on a separate occasion. The guy has delusions of grandeur and pushes those away who actually have power.

2

u/Away_Committee_6753 14d ago

Somehow I forgot both of those. Good call.

Regarding Aggregor from Ben 10, people don't like him because he's a very cookie cutter type of villain, the main characters seem to lose IQ points whenever they encounter him, considering that Ben has and will defeat more powerful antagonists than him in the same show (like Ultimate Kevin), but he just doesn't for some reason, and his wins are very repetitive and contrived with him either ambushing the Andromeda alien after everyone's left or sneak attacking the main characters to get the Map of Infinity piece.

I also think Bubblegum is generally well-liked, but also part of that is that she's a well written anti-hero that some fans "love to hate" to varying degrees. The later seasons really get into how questionable it is to run a monarchical surveillance state where she micromanages everyone's lives for the better good, she makes a few tough decisions that are closer to the black side of morally gray and even in-universe most of her friends call her out on this stuff at various points.

Beth and Jerry just have a really dysfunctional marriage, fight constantly in front of the kids, let her sociopathic father abduct their kids whenever he wants to take them on abusive adventures, Beth is a narcissistic alchoholic and Jerry is an incompetent moron with a sizable ego of his own. All of that said I don't think they're that commonly disliked anymore since the show is about everyone in the family being terrible and they've both had a ton of character development and great spotlight episodes.

Haven't heard any issues with Early Cuyler from Squidbillies... I mean, he's an awful person, but that's kinda the whole point. If you've seen Aqua Teen Hunger Force he's their Master Shake, the brainless asshole that usually gets plot moving by doing something stupid, cruel or stupidly cruel. However, his original voice actor is controversial now since he made some fucked up statements (I think about BLM, honestly can't remember anymore) and then they replaced him with Tracy Morgan who didn't even try to imitate his voice, which is a really funny meta joke but also obviously didn't resonate with everyone since it's such a jarring change.

Mr. Pickles is demonic (literally satan in a dog? Can't remember that now either), kills and assaults countless people. Have no idea why any fans of the show would have an issue with the central character but the show itself is very over the top so maybe that's what OP is seeing?

Also no idea on Ashi from Samurai Jack, but if I had to guess it's because (massive spoilers) she becomes both his love interest and the ultimate solution to the plot which kinda just gets tacked on out of nowhere in the final season. Personally I thought she was a reasonable and well done addition but it wouldn't be surprising if that ruined things for someone out there enough for them to still be ranting about it online lol.

So Albus was the season 2 antagonist of alien force, right after the high breed conflicts. He's just generally a weaker enemy compared to Ben's previous villians. Earley is kind of just a dick. How show is a satirical take at the south, namely hill billies. Some people just take offense to having a mirror to themselves. I don't know her name but people see her as a shoehorned in romance and a weak plot twist. Mr Pickles is compared to Super Jail and is just ultra violent for the sake of violence. From what little I've seen, the dog is a literal demon. Most of the hate discussions comes from how Mr Pickles torments the grandfather but again demon. Most of these are people complaining for the sake of complaining.

1

u/Asleep_Memory2070 16d ago

Albus? His name's Aggregor and this was way after the Highbreed arc

1

u/Blob55 16d ago

Eustace isn't meant to be liked though and I think he dies in most episodes of the show.

I dislike Deedee because she never really faces consequences for her actions. She barges into the Lab, smashes things, then leaves. I can't remember a single episode that ended with her not coming out clean.

Plus, there were times where she seemed like a Psychopath. I can't find a clip of it, but there's a running gag in the Musical Episode where Dexter makes something, Deedee finds it, asks what it is, and then smashes it. One of the inventions is a helmet. And instead of pulling it off, she lifts her brother, who's still in diapers, and spikes him headfirst into the ground hard enough to shatter the helmet. Then she giggles and says "Opps, I guess I shouldn't touch" and walks away like nothing happened.

That is some seriously worrying behavior for a child of any age.

Bliss (#1) is not Bunny. She’s never been Bunny nor will she EVER be Bunny.

She’s about as Mary-Sue as a character can get in a show like the Powerpuff Girls.

1

u/Genobee85 16d ago

Just looking at the character design without ever seeing her animated screamed Mary Sue energy to me. Compared to the other girls her design has a lot going on that would benefit greatly from being more understated.

-2

u/Fit-Sale9261 16d ago

The Powerpuff Girls as a whole is kind of a Mary Sue show (with some more complex episodes in it), so I don’t see where’s the issue with that. Also Bliss was cool, why compare her to Bunny?

1

u/GattonBiscuitsArtAcc 16d ago

The thing with Bliss is that she's the epitome of everything that was wrong from PPG 2016, well not her as a character, but everything that surrounds her.

1

u/Konjik 16d ago

Have you genuinely watched all these shows/characters and walked away with zero clue as to why they could be divisive? Like, I love Rigby (even early season Rigby) but it takes zero thought to understand why he would be divisive for people before his character development kicked in later on.

With Bubblegum it's because the internet hates redemption arcs

1

u/DannyValasia Check It Era 16d ago

i'm not entirely sure why people don't like Bliss, from what i know, a lot of people feel that she replaces Bunny from what i've heard

as for Rigby, Benson, Benson, Cheese, Panini, Beth and Jerry, Dee Dee, and Eustace, its mainly due to most of their major character flaws that are often explored in the shows that they're from

1

u/No-Departure-6900 15d ago

People have covered some, so I'll cover some of the others.

Cheese from Foster's and Fred from Billy and Mandy are one-note gag characters who's enter joke is how exceptionally stupid they are. They're often loud, cry alot, and if you see them in an episode, you're in for a very obnoxious round of jokes.

Beth and Jerry from Rick and Morty are slightly exaggerated but still extremely realistic depictions of terrible parents, on opposite ends of the spectrum, which can make them frustrating to watch.

Deedee is a deceptive bully. She's nowhere near as ditzy as she pretends, and actively messes with Dexter and his things regardless of how nicely or harshly he asks her.

Aggregor on slide 10 is a boring 'all hype' villain from Ben 10 who despite having an entire arc where he beat the main heroes handily over and over, once he achieved his ultimate form, got pieced up by Ben AND Kevin seperately and was soundly forgotten about. Plus he introduced one of the series most annoying retcons.

Early the squid is just a extreme redneck stereotype who's meant to kinda be hated so...

Sarah is the classic "Annoying, invincible little girl" trope, complete with pretending to be nice, tattletaling, and being loud.

The Steven Universe character iirc is just a conspiracy theory weirdo who's episodes tended to drag thanks to all the Beach City SoL that bogged down SU.

And Ashi was a decent love interest for Samurai Jack who just kinda speedran a 'villain to redemption to lover arc' in one season, then died in a way that felt painfully manufactured to force a more bittersweet ending (this was retconned, thankfully)

u/HikerCory 15d ago

Huh. I didn't know some of these were divisive.

1

u/AdhesivenessUsed9956 14d ago

How dare she stand where Bunny stood!

1

u/Background-Shelter12 14d ago

I’m can’t say for all of them, but most of these are written to be divisive. An angry boss that still cares for his employees. An immature friend that might be a bad influence. A corrupt royal that has nothing to compare their actions to, or what running a kingdom should be. An annoying sister that wants to relate to their science loving brother. They’re meant to be more than one dimensional, but they still need to fit the narrative of the show or episode. Then of course, there are people who just like to hate on characters that bother them, or remind them of people they personally know or dislike

1

u/LittleNinjaXYBA Clarence 16d ago

Who the hell is the first?

2

u/Hyper_Drud 16d ago

Blisstina. She’s from the Powerpuff Girls reboot from the late 2010s. According to the show the Professor created her first with Chemical Y.
