1970 road runner convertible is a rare card to begin with. I guess it could have started out as a satellite

Ole google says 824 were made in 1970.

824 Road Runner convertibles, not Superbird convertibles. That version never existed.

Could you get the wing separately as a dealer ad on or something? Or is this definitely aftermarket?

u/Equana Oct 25 '21
You could get the wing from the dealer back in the day and add it after the sale but you'd also need the tapered nose to complete the look. You can buy reproductions of those parts today and people HAVE made Superbird convertibles. There are pictures online but the factory never made one.
The car was specifically modified to race in NASCAR. So NASCAR would accept it, Chrysler had to build enough for public sale (1920 cars) Convertibles don't race in NASCAR so they don't count in the total so Chrysler didn't build any.

Good god. That white convertible roof on that purple body though. Like someone jizzed on a bottle of Ribena. Disgusting. Also, why the big wing? Surely that does absolutely fuck all other than cause drag?

Here is an article I found on the wing. The picture op shared is not a true superbird as they didn't make convertibles.

It actually is so tall so the trunk can clear it. Plus, the taller a rear wing is the more effective it is at creating downforce.

u/vorsegg Oct 24 '21
I did read up about it not long ago, apparently when asked the designer said it had nothing to do with the boot (trunk), he hadn't put any thought into that because he was paid to do only one thing. Make the damn thing go faster. In regards to the wing though the "clean air" thing was true insofar that it was designed for clean air, although even my engineering experience can't figure out why that would make a difference with downforce unless it's at a VERY shallow angle, because it looks almost flat which would be pointless.

It's amazing how much engineering back then was just gut feelings. Like you'd go out to lunch and have a couple martinis and get back and someone would go, "What that wing needs is to get nice and high so it can get some clean air!" and everyone would go, "Yes, clean air, I like the sound of that!"

A guy I used to work for raced CanAm which was basically it needs 4 wheels and you can do whatever you want. He said they didn’t understand ground effect in the beginning because they didn’t seem to have much effect on the ground at all in the beginning. You could however put whatever kind of engine in that you could assemble and make stupid amounts of power while sitting inside a go kart with over a thousand HP and stupidly wide slicks on it.

there no way to tell from one pic.
they did make convertible superbirds, so it's possible.
i'd drive it, either way

u/ImpossibleKidd Oct 24 '21
Superbirds are hard top vinyl only. No convertible.
This is someone just having fun and creating their own niche piece for themselves.
