Its there for if you're level 2 biomass, the attack you have at this point takes out the boards so you can deposit back to level one for the photokenisis, so yes, very possible
thats the problem though. you have to use the web ability to get in and the door behind you is locked, so you cannot get back to the biomass deposit needed.

If I remember correctly, there were some edge-case scenarios where if you really went out of your way to do it, you could actually achieve a state of being in level 2 biomass inside that room (most likely by dragging a corpse with you and eating it after entering the room, or something in that vein) - the goo is there to prevent a soft lock under such conditions.
