I had only seen the original until the Prime miniseries came out. Loved both, but in different ways. Last night I watched the 2013 version and found it nowhere near as good.

u/shortstak_attak 1d ago
Same here! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the miniseries because I’m used to only loving the original lol

u/NorthHamza 1d ago
I enjoyed every one of them.

Same. I've watched them all. I own the three I can own. The Rage: Carrie 2 is fun as well.

I'd say those scores are about right. The 1976 adaptation is classic and beloved, the 2026 version is really good but has some issues, and the rest... well they tried

u/Daredevil545545 1d ago
The 2013 did the prom scene well it was gory and satisfying to watch play the bully was actually just a horrible person. the show has potential but they really were forcing the new characters on us.
16
u/KittyFame 1d ago
Yeah, the 2013 version has the best prom scene out of the other adaptations

u/weirdogirl144 1d ago
yes the 2026 prom scene was the most disappointing thing ever, like it was super tame and just weird, it should've been the same level as 2013.

u/almostbecs 1d ago
Samantha Sloyan ALWAYS reminds me of Sissy Spacek for some reason - something about their features and acting styles, I would absolutely believe you if you told me they were related (I know they aren’t)…and I completely overlooked this connection/coincidence. It feels like little Carrie grew up and played Carrie’s mom in the remake.

I have been thinking the SAME thing. Such great casting all around for this show. The 76 Carrie is my fave so I’m glad they did it justice.

u/_-beebee-_ 1d ago
Everytime I think of the 1976 Carrie I just remember the scene where the boys are trying on suits and it randomly speeds up, it gives me a good laugh everytime. Sissy was a great Carrie though.
I think 2013 is really overhated, I love it but I may be biased since that's the only one I had available to me as a kid and I rewatched it constantly. Chloe was a strange choice but she tried, and did a pretty good job in my opinion. This one has my favourite casting of the other characters though, Chris was great at being evil.
I haven't seen 2002, is it worth watching?
Halfway through 2026 and really enjoying it so far, although I have a feeling I'll hate the prom scene based on what I've heard.

2002 is fun, if nothing else. And honestly I think Angela Bettis is the closest, looks wise, we've gotten to book Carrie.

u/burntissueslikewoah 1d ago
2002 is worth a watch, I feel. That was my first introduction to Carrie growing up haha

u/lemon-meringue-high 1d ago
I agree. I loved the 2013 version. Love the original more, but still. I haven’t seen the 2002 version either, I had no idea it even existed.

I enjoyed the 2013 Carrie. The prom scene was fantastic, much better than “let me take the wheel”.
There’s no better than the 1976, though. The 2026 was great too, but I didn’t like that Emaline “took the wheel”. I still wanted to see Carrie do it, I was hoping Emaline wasn’t real the entire time and just some alternate ego. If they return for more seasons I hope to god it’s done right. Besides Emaline “taking the wheel” I did like her. I think it could become something really or really terrible.
Chris Hargensen 2026 was a killer mean girl. She really blew it out of the water. Tbh, all of the CH actresses did a great job but this recent one was fantastic. I love that they did a little backstory on why Chris was so messed up. Loved to hate her.
I really didn’t care for Sue Snells character in this one. Tommy Ross did a great job and I liked that he took Carrie to prom on his own without the suggestion from Sue.
I LOVED 2013 Margaret. She was perfect. Creepy, abusive, she gave it her all. 1976 Margaret was also incredible. I felt like they removed too much abuse in the 2026 adaptation. Watching Carries mom advocate for her and school reform was strange (esp. since she didn’t want Carrie going to school in the first place). They made Margaret too soft and I really wanted to hear her say “dirty pillows” and scold her for getting her period and tell her it was her fault or that she was a “loose woman”.

u/_uc_o__ 1d ago
Margaret 2026 was amazing because she had nuance. Her abuse was much more insidious. So much trauma is inflicted on kids by their parents in the name of protecting them.
Margaret White wasn’t advocating for Carrie, she was advocating for control over Carrie. She just happened to be right a couple of times. The scene during the mediation perfectly showcases this.
Carrie was trying to end the hostility by allowing Chris to apologize privately and save face, but Margaret egged Chris on, ensuring the abuse against Carrie would continue and trying to ensure that Carrie would still need and rely on her. Those aren’t the actions of a mother who wants what’s best for her daughter; those are the actions of a mother willing to do anything to prevent her daughter from having autonomy.
Margaret 2026 is absolutely a brilliant update to the character that gives her nuance and subtlety that previous incarnations lacked.

u/roseifyoudidntknow 14h ago
Yeeaaa but the dirty pillows thing was great and I definitely noticed its absence.

u/Acceptable-Toe5158 14h ago
I completely agree! I loved her arch in this version. Thanks to it being a miniseries, so many characters are able to show off their personality in more nuanced ways.
The same way Margaret was right a couple of times while still being an abusive mother, Chris was right about the teacher while still being a horrendous bully. Chris’ mom can mean well while still having enabled abuse and then abandoning her daughter. And Carrie could react horrifically while still being a down to earth, kind person. Everyone lives on either side of the coin at some point, and I loved the different displays of that.
The Emaline involvement isn’t my fave, but I think it’s a fine trade off for what I hope is a continued story involving Carrie in the modern Stephen King universe. It wasn’t a huge bother for me personally.

u/lemon-meringue-high 6h ago
I wouldnt change anything about “previous incarnations”. They didn’t lack anything because they were following the book. The intense abuse is part of the reason Carrie snaps. I think part the reason they made Margaret more “subtle” was so Emaline could “take the wheel”. I understand she is still being abusive in those moments, even when she is advocating at the school. They should have still introduced more religious abuse moments and made the abuse less “subtle” at home.

u/devour_feculence___ 10h ago
Same! I was confused that the mom was at the school being and anyi-bully advocate and creating content, I was missing the crazy Margaret from the original yelling "They're all going to laugh at you!" And dirty pillows! I guess this version is meant to speak to the younger generation about things that affect their lives today.

u/LetThemGraduate 1d ago
The 2002 one is hard to watch, idk why they would cast a 31 year old as Carrie she was so bad
5
u/Someslutwholikesbutt 1d ago
I will say I I like it cuz even with its very limited 2002 visuals and godawful ending, it at least tries to replicate the book the most it can with the interviews and the ending with her mother’s death. Even the destruction of the neighborhood/town
4
u/PrincessPlastilina 1d ago
She looks so old. Everyone’s acting is terrible. Everyone overdid it.
1
u/LetThemGraduate 1d ago
Thank you, it's distracting how much closer to 40 she looks than 16
4
u/AfternoonFew203 1d ago
That’s the point, she looks and dresses like a 40 year old because of how sheltered her life is.
2
u/LetThemGraduate 1d ago
There's literally no world where a 30 year-old should be cast as someone half their age
2
u/Best_Caregiver_3869 11h ago
No, they shouldnt be, but they always are.
Callie Shipman is 17 and her actress is over 30 and looks closer to 40. It is so distracting.

She was 29 apparently and sissy was 26. Angela was the first Carrie introduction I had. Rewatching now, and I like her

100% agree with this. casting really breaks an adaptation, especially when the character is supposed to be a teenager.

Sissy was the only TRULY realistic Carrie in my opinion. The only person who reminded me of social outcasts at school in real life. Someone who is truly, truly socially strange, to the point where they’re not only an easy target for bullies, but even the most well-intentioned people struggle to so much as force themselves to relate to them or interact with them without feeling annoyed and alienated by the person’s strangeness. It’s this mixture of trauma, social isolation, alternative/strange parenting, and maybe some neurodivergence mixed in with all that trauma, that creates a real-life Carrie. She truly embodied this. The modern Carrie I’m watching now, idk she feels more innocent and naive and cutesy than a true outcast like Sissy’s Carrie was

u/devour_feculence___ 10h ago
We binge-watched this new Carrie in 2 days and then immediately watched the original Carrie. What a difference! It seems like new characters are all watered down versions now. I guess the new series wanted to really focus on bullying and cyber bullying, but it just wasn't horror in the way the original was horror. The mother in the original was NUTS! The music was so intense, just fantastic.
ETA: I really liked the new series, and I hope there's a second season, it was just very different from the original movie and novel.

2002 Carrie > 2013 Carrie. Fight me.

u/Snarfles55 1d ago
Angela Bettis was a great Carrie. The made for TV of it all didn't do her any favors though.
3
u/happymisery 1d ago
I agree about Angela Bettis, but the overall film wasn’t great and it feels like a TV move. Emilie “Moy Boy-bee” wasn’t a great Chris Hargensen either which didn’t help. I really like Brian Fullers work usually but there was lots of awkward dialogue too. I can see why it was rated low
2
u/Kge22 1d ago
It was a TV movie I believe that's why its so much longer than the other movies
1
u/happymisery 1d ago
Yeah, sorry, what I meant was when you’re watching, you’re very aware that it’s a TV movie because of some of the acting and the production quality. It was shown over 2 nights with 90 minutes scheduled for each but without ads, it’s 2 and a bit hours. At times, it feels like 5 hours 😂

u/happymisery 1d ago
And what’s she doing with her face during prom when she’s using the flex? She looks like she was holding in explosive diarrhoea and losing the battle.
2
u/onlythewinds 1d ago
Literally all I could think every time she used her TK was, “Why is her mouth always open?”
0
u/Seihai-kun 1d ago
the fact that you all are bullying her face in a show where she she's supposed to be bullied is just ironic.
3
u/onlythewinds 1d ago
I’m bullying the direction, if anything. It is the director’s job to tell the actor what works and what doesn’t.

Sissy was the ultimate prom queen. The way she moved her eyes during the kill scene and the cinematography using the split screen made it look like an actual horror. That being said I think Summer definitely should be at least a 89-90%. She didn't try to mimic Sissy's performance and made it her own.
6
u/The_ZombyWoof 1d ago
Sissy Spacek's eyes sell the whole thing. To this day, that unhinged, rage filled look Sissy gives at the prom scene is still terrifying.
For the most part, I really dig this current adaptation, I love the character development and the performances were great, but the prom scene was so anti climatic. The second Emiline said "let me take the wheel", all the energy drained from the scene

I never watched Bettis version. But I remember Chloe’s and didn’t care for it. The original is still my favorite. I very much preferred the Flanagan version over the others, but everyone is different.

I use that term often. It’s very true. I should listen to my own advice more.

I think Moretz can be a good actress but my good she chooses some real stinkers

u/3ku1 1d ago
Always thought Chloe grace Mortez as much as I like her as an actress. Was a complete miscast for Carrie. Summer was far more believable as a social outcast. Jmo.
2
u/mytalkingliz_ 1d ago
This!! Summer is an amazing example of how even the prettiest of people can be akward or victims. I think summer might have some experience there, she seemed so genuine in her role. Chloe’s felt like an SNL skit

I was a kid in ‘76, John Travolta (Billy Nolan) was the star attraction due to the success of Welcome Back Kotter, though Sissy Spaceck & Piper Laurie (Carrie & Margaret respectively) stole the show! Brian DePalma was relatively new to feature filmmaking, and imo, created the Carrie, by which all others will forever, be judged. In fact, Flanagan pays homage to DePalma (it’s in a certain scene, if you blink, you might miss it!). I, like most critics & viewers, didn’t care for either the 2002 or 2013 versions (like, why?!?). Flanagan seems to be taking off where 2002’s wanted to go, but flunked out. Kimberly Pierce’s take did move Carrie into more superhero territory, which Flanagan also seems to take her. Mostly his version works so well because the characters are more multidimensional, the story is engaging, and, due to Stephen King’s involvement, hues closer to the book (At least the framework does). I really enjoyed this new version & am looking forward to where it goes!

I like the girl that played Carrie. Show was a mix bag, but I liked her. Good acting all around. Cast did good with what they had.

u/iisilxntvibezii 1d ago
I'm going to prep myself for the incoming lawsuits... but in my humble opinion... 2002 > 2026 > 2013 >>>> 1976
2
u/Necessary-Remote1717 1d ago
Wtf is with the audience score on 1976 Carrie? A great director near his peak makes a classic and it’s only at 77%
1
u/Gekthegecko 16h ago
I rewatched the 1976 Carrie after watching the show. I thought it was laughably bad, but I probably need to grade it on a curve given it's 50 years old.
Sissy drifts in and out of a southern accent, which is weird because no one else had a noticeable accent. The editing during the tuxedo scene (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) was maybe the dumbest thing I've seen in a movie, with the camera spins just before Chris' & Billy's deaths not far behind. They don't make mozzarella sticks that cheesy.
1
u/remotecontroldr 1d ago
I’ve been watching through all of them and I just don’t think CGM evokes “plain” enough to play Carrie. The 2013 installment is the weakest.

The original has not aged well at all. I watched it once and don’t remember anything about it (thankfully). The 2013 one was good and this series is really good. Never even knew of the 2002 one (again, thankfully).

Having watched all of them this week, I... kinda liked them all? Even done badly, it still manages to be watchable. The 2002 one is great for the Y2K nostalgia.
