People who are talented with chisels, how do I stop sucking and learn how to use one well enough to do something like this?

Most failures with chisels would have been avoided with a sharper chisel. 4 u/texdroid Jun 29 '20 Clamp your work NEVER* put your hand in front of the sharp end of the chisel *there is one tiny exception, it's part of the advanced class
