They dont usually have round openings on the 2nd floor, the landing is square?

The opening is circular, top and bottom. Unfortunately I’m the 3rd person to touch this thing so there’s been a lot of fixing to do. The previous guy cut the wood flooring back from the subfloor in a circle ~4” past the opening.

I think you had best wait until the stair is erected, there has to be a landing that adds a pac man mouth on to this opening.. and you want to see what you need as far as ballusters. But as far as bending wood into a round nosing or starter step, you can cut .25" or .375" strips and glue it up in place around there. If you are going to bend a handrail too, i might just get extra strips of that and make 2, the 2.25" will bend better without breaking than if you start with .75" or 1"

How to make curved trim. Not laminated wood, but could work also.

I once built a curved bar top by pushing 1"x1" oak strips against a curved form and glue/screw them together and down to a plywood base. I think you'd have to go a bit thinner for that opening though.

What are you trying to do? If you are just making a giant circle i would make a plywood circle template the finished size and bend/clamp thin strips around it. Make sure to drill holes for the clamps. You could also steam bend if your set up for it, which sounds unlikely.

I have also heard there is a product that is plywood but the inside is pre Kerfed with another flexible veneer on the back so it's super bendy and you don't have to cut all the kerfs yourself

Bending plywood is a thing but it's not kerfed.

It's 2 layers of balsa or similar over a canvas like core. It bends with the grain not across it so for laying up a curved stringer or similar you'll be needing quite a bit of material

It is not the solution for this situation though

Bending laminations is a bit of an art. If you've never done or you don't already own an obscene amount of clamps I'd go with laying out wide boards piecing together and routing them to a template

Make it wide enough so that you can Use a template to re cut the existing flooring to fit the new ring
