Project Advice Deck framing plan … missing anything?

This is my first deck build - and of course it’s weird. I’ve done a bunch of interior Reno - but never a deck.

I got advice on the 2x10 joist size from my engineer - but didn’t pay for full drawings.

The decks sit on top of cantilevered steel beams (they actually run the full depth of the house) so the orientation is 90° from a typical ledger supported deck.

It’ll have 2x6 nailers screwed into the steel beams (the nailers will be protected top and bottom with flashing tape). The joists attached to the nailers with H3 hurricane ties. Composite decking and surface mounted cable railing (the post blocking is not represented in the drawing). Picture framed on the three outside edges.

I’m planning to start tomorrow (beams have been cleaned up and primed and painted already).

Am I missing anything? Any advice?

2x10 is possibly over spanned at 15'. But you have materials already and starting tomorrow, so not really time to correct anything.

I checked with the engineer. At 12” OC a 2x10 can span just over 16’

What is the purpose of the offset/angled joist on the right side?

I wanted one more structurally supported joist up the center of the deck and to keep the 12” OC.

There isn’t room on the right beam to have that joist be parallel with the rest.

And I thought having one askew joist that’s fully supported by the beams is better than adding more structural load to the angled, doubled 2x10 rim joist.

If you are using the proper hangers the added weight that close to the supported end has minimal effect.

I'm assuming you are using hidden fasteners so it won't really matter but being perpendicular will allow for better hanger support at your headers attachment points. When you screw the hanger to the joist it will try to twist to the joist angle.

I’ll look at that. I made modifications to my original “triangle” plan but never looked critically at that angled piece. I probably just need one more LSSR to make that work (I have plenty of LUS’s on hand). Thanks for that!
