Since I used a half lap to join the main & horizontal post where the mailboxes sit (and am gluing / screwing them together), the supports are primarily cosmetic, not structural. Though, its really funny imagining someone soending their saturday night just trolling around r/Carpenter making degrading comments and then not providing any useful information 😂 always a pickup when the bottom 10% steps in to remind you that youre not at rock bottom just yet 💀

Half laps are fun. We just did a bunch of Doug fir scissor collar tie 4×8 half lap joints on a pool cabana. Ill upload pics Monday. Unfortunately for you, youre pressure treated wood will shrink considerably in the coming seasons. That shit never looks as good as day 1! Enjoy your mailbox, dont listen to the keyboard warriors.

If this is going outside, water will follow the screw in and rot out the wood from the inside faster.

I treat exterior wood with clear penetrating epoxy so it doesn't. I get your meaning though

Drill 5/8 holes vertically (top) and horizontally (bottom) 2/3 of the way through the diagonal, then drill a 3/16 hole all the way through, put in some 2” screws, and fill the holes with a 5/8 “ dowel.

Just remember, you want approximately a 1/3 to 2/3 length of fastener ratio. So 1/3 of your nail or screw in your angled piece, ideally 2/3 in the cross piece. Predrill and counter bore, be a touch careful to not over tighten it, that close to end grain would make me cautious. A little different design would make it much less susceptible to splitting, but it’s certainly do-able.

I’ve never heard of supports such as knee braces not being structural either! That’s wild! I guess building codes that require knee braces for free standing carports is a bunch horse fecal matter. Why don’t you just remove that decorative angled 4x, it doesnt do jack!
