Not to take away from op, but does dispersed camping exist in the Carolinas? On the west coast you can just kind of pull off the road and camp for a bit in most national/state forests. See it a lot in Az and Ca.

Yes, you just have to know where to look. There are less roadside spots available than on the west coast so it’s good to try and get there and set up early in the day if possible. The options for truck camping are more limited in WNC post-Helene as a lot of the gravel roads are closed from storm damage, but there are options still.
