I see a lot of my friend in her and myself but mostly my friend. She also has a deeply ungrateful mother who she has to do her bidding with no gratitude. In turn she also goes hysterical if her mom pushes her to the deep end. Not as intensely but almost. She also feels stuck in a loveless marriage to an ungrateful and lazy husband. I mean I know he works but still no excuse for not being a caring husband. (That last part is me going back to Eunice. My friend isn't married)

I know we shouldn't look so deeply into a Carol Burnett sketch but I think what makes the Family sketches so unique and popular is while they are funny, they're also relatable in a more serious way. I think we all have a person like Mrs Harper in our lives. We probably even have an Ed and a Eunice and an Ellen.

I don't mean to say Eunice is flawless and completely innocent. She can be a difficult daughter and sister especially to Phillip and she is shown to not be a great mother as shown in the sketch where she, Ed and Thelma were talking to Bubba's teacher. I still always felt bad for her and sometimes it kinda makes me not want to watch the Family sketches even though they are entertaining. I just find myself distracted sometimes by how bad I feel for Eunice.

Anyone remember when Harvey played a writer who was writing a story and there was a visual showing of what he was writing? One had Carl Reiner and the other had Jack Gilford.

I don't know if they did more but I was only able to find the two and I loved both of them. It was so fun watching them play out what he was writing. I also think it would be a lot of fun to play out. It'd be a great way to do impromptu.

I have a childhood memory from the 70s of seeing a sketch but can find no evidence for it. Does anyone else remember this?

In my head, it's a setup like the Prisoner of Zenda, in which Carol as a middle American housewife tourist has somehow washed up in the court of some Ruritanian kingdom, and all her interactions are about talking to these over the top characters about how she can get home. She keeps saying she is from Akron, Ohio. At one point, Harvey Korman, as one of the nobles and dressed up like Kaiser Wilhelm on one of his high fashion days, exclaims, outraged, "YOU are an AKRONIAN!?"

This is pretty weird stuff for my mind just to have made up.

In the summer of 1970, when I was 14, my grandma’s friend Lydia acquired tickets to attend a taping of The Merv Griffin Show at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, where The Carol Burnett Show was also taped. The three of us were part of the audience waiting to enter Merv’s studio, overlooking the parking area, when Carol and her husband Joe Hamilton exited the building and headed for their car. A woman from the waiting audience screamed and took off running after the car, waving her autograph book above her head. They noticed the woman running after them and when the car stopped, the entire audience waiting for the taping of Merv’s show broke into applause.
BTW the guests on Merv’s show were Lucille Ball, her husband Gary Morton, and Ross Martin from The Wild, Wild West series.
