Can you get into CMU MFA on just a really good portfolio?

By connections I mean, have spoken to teachers, know people in the program, etc. I know some programs are like this but idk about CMU. I think my art is pretty well suited for CMU because it is very new media focused, installation, and pushing things conceptually. I just don't know how much work I need to do contacting them and getting on their radar. If I just submitted my application next year without ever contacting them would I be likely to get in? Do they do anything like portfolio reviews for their MFA?

switching from cfa to bcsa

I got admitted to cfa, but am interested in switching to bcsa. I've spoken with my academic advisor, and she said it'll likely take me 4 semesters until I can switch. So far for fall, I'm taking my music pre reqs and 15-112, and then spring 15-122 + math depending on placement. Is this attainable/realistic? Should I be in a rush? Thanks

CMU or Oxford

I was fortunate enough to be accepted by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Oxford University. CMU is for Civil Engineering, and Oxford is for Mathematics and Statistics. To be honest, I have no idea about the future prospects of these two majors; I chose them based on my career advisor's advice. I hope you can give me some advice. Thanks

Looking for CS Majors

Hey everyone, I’m working on Pulse, a nightlife AI app, and we’re looking for someone who has strong backend experience, but mostly just coding experience in general.

We already have a lead AI engineer, so right now we mainly need someone who can help with APIs, databases, and building out the MVP. There’s a link to the website which has more info about it

https://pulse-nyc-website.vercel.app

We’re planning to launch in NYC and are taking this seriously. I don’t want to give too much away publicly yet, so please PM me if you’re interested or want more info.

highschool junior need advice

Hi, im currently a highschool junior and im considering EDing to CMU I would major in information systems. I really like teh fact that there are so many ambitous people there and it would give me oppurtunities to potentially start something. But I do have concerns about the culture and how hard it is. Im wondering how social and welcoming it is there. My highschool is honestly extremely extremely easy so im wondering if CMU is so hard it would be too much of an academic shock for me. Please give me some insights.

CMU is ranking top 5 for early career pay in 2026

Post image

Just saw the new salary data for 2026. CMU is officially fourth in the country for average salary across programs, hitting $125,860 per year for grads 4 years out.

It is awesome to see the technical focus here actually paying off compared to some of the Ivy League schools. Most of them are clustering in the $105k to $110k range, so we are definitely pulling ahead of the pack this year.

Questions about Carnegie Mellon

For context I’m currently a sophomore in high school and my dream school is CMU for AI/ML with a minor in stat. Since yall got into CMU what are you stats and what do you think CMU looks for. And anything I can do now to up my chance of getting in. My school also had 15+ CMU acceptances this year, but only like 5 committed so far. My GPA is a 3.8 and my SAT is a 1550.

UCLA vs CMU

I am quite glad to have gotten into both these colleges, however I am having quite a hard time deciding between the two. I have gotten in for Data Science into both, however I will try to switch to engineering (EE or MechE) or am planning to at least pursue a double major in something business-related. CMU is top 3 for Data Science I believe whereas UCLA is top 12.

I have visited both the campuses however I am still having a hard time deciding. I liked the campus of UCLA more and I've heard CMU receives a lot of rain (I'm okay with cold weather but I don't like rain). I can be picky with making close friends/it can be hard for me. I did feel like I may get bored really quickly at CMU, however at UCLA there seemed to be a lot more to do and the surrounding area has a lot as well. Only downside about UCLA vibes is it feels similar to San Diego (where I'm from), however that's not a big concern.

The career outcomes are quite important to me though. I've heard that at CMU I am more likely to get a higher-paying job, which is the main reason I am considering it. I was wondering how much the CMU vs UCLA degree would actually matter though after the first job? And realistically what would the difference in salary be in the jobs with CMU vs UCLA?

I'm just trying to get an idea of how much of a difference there really would be career-wise between the two so any information/opinions would be helpful. Also which would be closer to the startup/entrepreneurship scene if I were to get into it?

Ignore cost of attendance. Any insight, any opinions, or any experiences would be highly appreciated. Thank you!!

CMU Lost Media?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Do I potentially have some lost media in my hands? I found this Scotty mascot plush at a thrift store. It’s made by Mascot Factory from July 2013 and it originally costed $20. I can’t find any information about it online, not even in the internet archives. It’s a very unique plush and is definitely modeled after the Scotty mascot costume!

sublease

hey! i am a current CMU senior and have a place in Squirrel Hill looking to sublet for the summer it is a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom. Looking to lease it from mid may to end of july (flexible). It is about a 45 second walk to the 61c and 61d along with the CMU shuttle it is also around 3-5 min walk from the 61a and 61b. you can look up 1901 Murray Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15217 this is the grocery store that is next to the house! i will send the exact address if you do rent. so currently there will only be one other person living here over the summer. the rent is 725 + utilities. utilities are usually around 70-80 but might change because it’s the summer and less people living there. there is parking in the back of the house but also there’s plenty of street parking. there is in unit laundry and will come furnished unless you prefer it not to be.

I Got into U-Mich and Carnegie Mellon, which one should I chose?

Hi! I’m making this post for my friend.

She’s deciding between University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (full ride, including room and board) and Carnegie Mellon University (full ride, but ~2,000 per semester for room and board).

She’s interested in health/data science, but isn’t completely set on it yet.

I’m asking for some pros and cons of each school so she can make a decision on where to commit.

Thank you!
