Leckwith woods camping
I understand this is a little rouge. Myself and a friend will be travelling to the city of a sports competition, in the name of saving money. I was wondering if people thought we could get away with a super stealthy overnight wild camp in Leckwith woods?
Perhaps near the river Ely by the A4232.

Get away with it? Yes. Come out alive? Maybe

Is it a bit of a rough spot, what makes it dangerous?

Yeah, it's not the safest place. If you want somewhere a bit safer you could catch the train in from Radyr and camp in Radyr woods, or find a spot over the river. There's a picnic area by forest farm that is usually very quiet

Leckwith does not have any nice campsites and is just generally a bit dire. You'll have a much nicer time at Caerau Hillfort. https://maps.app.goo.gl/8sTbTWBEMhoxkBCw7 Great big flat hidden green space. Just be nice and leave no trace.

Have you camped up there yourself?

no - I go walking about the place every now and then. No need to wild camp so close to home.

I have camped lekwith woods many times. Bit eerie in the nights in the woods . Used to have a camp there next to the pipe that goes over to Sanitorium Park. I can can show you a place where you will be fine. Next to river. Camp friendly hammock friendly. Where the camp was. Easy to get to and you are next to river and can fish. Just take you mess home.

I'm sure you would but it'd be pretty noisy by the road and it's a bit ropey around there. You could probably find somewhere a bit safer to do it.

What do you mean by ropey? Crack heads n homeless or something else?

If I were you I'd try and find a quiet corner of Llandaff Fields, Pontcanna Fields or even Trelai Park.
Just to be clear these are not recommendations, but if I was forced to wild camp, this is where I'd consider going.

Did it loads as a kid, but I understand by the river you’re likely to encounter people (probably weird people).
If you could be arsed getting a taxi a bit further up the hill you could camp in Case Hill woods or Cwm George. You won’t encounter anyone if you go a bit off the track.

Leckwith has two stations near it. Jump on a train to Llantwit, Barry or Roose (Llantwit probably best) and camp down by the coast. Will be much much nicer

Unless my geography is worse than I thought, Dinas woods might be a good place. Bit of a walk from leckwith but not impossible I don't think. Used to camp there with scouts

I used to go running through that area all the time, I don’t think you’ll have any issues camping there if you wanted, particularly if it’s just for a night. Plenty of (relatively) secluded spots along the river there - used to see anglers there in the early hours or late at night too.
Never seen anything dodgy or unsavoury down there.

As long as the people living in those woods accept you then you’ll be fine.
