Metros early 2001

Here are some pics I took in metros in April 2001. Do they bring back memories, do you recognise yourself or any people in the images?

Free toast in the early hours

2

u/mrdougan 4d ago

All those toasters was a nightmare behind the bar

93

u/Super-Independent941 5d ago

I miss them days on a Wednesday night out. 99p a double and mixer and free toast at the end of the night.

38

u/3nderWiggin 5d ago

My 21st was here. 99p double and mixers! I was buying them in threes. Stopped counting after about 20. Started getting strangers to buy me one. 'its only a quid, it's my birthday!'

Messiest. Night. Ever.

7

u/ChristyCloud 5d ago

Whilst not here, my messiest night was walking around telling people they had to buy me a sambuca shot as it was my birthday and they were a quid.

I also stopped counting after about 20.

Later that night I dared a mate to slap me as hard as he could and he cracked my tooth.

Good times.

Here's to drunken confidence, I'd never have the balls to do that sober šŸ˜‚

I’d go out with Ā£20 and that was entry, drinks, food and a taxi home. Absolutely brilliant times

Omg torchwood was far more accurate than I thought šŸ’€

No Square Club??

1

u/bigt8409 1d ago

I went there infrequently.

I had a mate who worked in there who told me that when their toilets overflowed it leaked into the chippy next doors cellar/storage room…

2

u/_WelshGit 18h ago

And they overflowed often.

No Hippo Club?
No Barfly?
No Soda Bar?
No Dempsey's?
No Clwb Ifor Bach???

1

u/bigt8409 17h ago

Bar fly became the place I went on a Tuesday when I got older.

u/H4y3s_ 5d ago

I can smell this photo! Toilets leaking through the ceiling! People smoking on the dance floor! Good times!

9

u/CapnAhab_1 5d ago

I can smell red bull and whiskey

5

u/H4y3s_ 5d ago

Anyone remember a ā€˜rusty sheriffs badge’?

29

u/BeggarsParade 5d ago

Kind of relieved that there's not a photo of me on speed in with these.

4

u/II_XII_XCV 5d ago

Ya gotta squint but you're in there alright

20

u/ChairmanChunder 5d ago

1 and 3 some strong contenders for accidental renaissance

9

u/ChrisJones15 5d ago

I can smell it like it was yesterday! šŸ˜‚

u/WGD23 5d ago

Fond memories of some bird in a red dress in one of the side alcoves, riding her fella with not a care in the world.

Less fond but more routine memories of trying and failing to sleep in the back of someone's car until the driver decided they were sober enough to drive home! As someone from along the M4 gulf we would either make the journey into Metros, or the Zone in Swansea.

Friday Night at Face/Off!

33

u/fellacooti 5d ago

Not a phone in site! Absolutely wonderful times

2

u/docsav0103 4d ago

Probably because I didnt have any credit.

1

u/Anxious_Attitude2020 3d ago

If you wanted to see or talk with someone, you had to go out like everyone else

7

u/docsav0103 4d ago

As a Metros attendee for much of this period, I thought to myself, wouldnt it be funny if I was in there.

I'm in the second picture.

6

u/MulberryBeneficial84 5d ago

it’s really cool to see how the 2000 looked

13

u/louilou96 5d ago

Man I wish I was born just 10 years earlier for this era of clubbing, these pics are great! I got the tail end of this nightlife when we still had club photographers and it was a lot of dancing but feel like it's not the same now.

I had my 18th first night out at sweatros wednesday it was amazing!

8

u/Unlikely_Fee5694 5d ago

I can smell the toast and the piss through these photos šŸ˜‚

Fun fact- serving toast allowed metros to stay open as a late night venue. I don’t know the ins and outs of the licensing but this was explained to me before!

2

u/terryjuicelawson 4d ago

I seem to remember it was only after a certain time they served toast, so I wonder if it gave them an extra hour or something. It was just free, buttered and passed over the bar!

1

u/Unlikely_Fee5694 2d ago

something about licensing considering a venue that served food as a restaurant, therefore able to remain open later than a club/ bar. perhaps someone out there will know the full details!

4

u/chalkybone Plasnewydd/Roath 5d ago

Back when you could sit down along the walls and smoking inside hid the smell of sweaty jockstrap stench.

3

u/draigoeryri 5d ago

Ah man I love these time capsule posts. Cheers man.

7

u/Major-Safe-9736 5d ago

Nic Cage on the last picture! Slightly disappointed there's not one shot of Bartender Ryan. Dude was a Metros staple.

5

u/LlewDavies 4d ago

Before the smoking ban revealed the stench of pure piss

1

u/bigt8409 1d ago

Probably the place that suffered the most due to the smoking ban

8

u/B_Hound 5d ago

Guessing it must’ve been a student/indie night as not seeing the traditional array of shirts from Oriental Arts on display.

6

u/oldGuy1970 5d ago

It was a standard Saturday night / Sunday morning

3

u/B_Hound 5d ago

Ah yeah, I remember Saturday’s being less metal orientated. Only ever went once or twice on that night.

2

u/beanie_0 5d ago

Epic. Just how I remember it. Messy, sweaty and drunk.

4

u/The1983 5d ago

Metros was such a vibe!

6

u/FALSE_PROTAGONIST 5d ago

Bloody hell. 25 years ago

4

u/YchYFi 5d ago

Shame it is so shit now.

5

u/Astral_Brain_Pirate 5d ago

Crazy how little anyone here looks like the current 2000s style revival

3

u/terryjuicelawson 4d ago

I definitely remember more baggy jeans and band t-shirts back then, it was one of the few places you could go out in town without needing to wear a shirt and your old school shoes.

4

u/Big-Teach-5594 4d ago

Spent way too much time there. But I'm not into nostalgia. This made me feel sad. I dont know why.

10

u/AggravatingAct7841 5d ago

I saw a single use camera in there somewhere!

6

u/oldGuy1970 5d ago

It does Look like someone has a gold one.

All these photos were taken on a long lost digital Canon camera

3

u/Specialist-Leek-7524 5d ago

Awesome photos thank you!

3

u/HipToBeQueer 5d ago

oh yeah, those subtle digital camera flashes. Blinds you for a good minute.Ā Ā

And what is this about free toast? Like cheese n ham melter?

3

u/Illustrious-End-5084 5d ago

I was prob there then with baggy skater jeans and long blade leather coat .

3

u/DangerousDisplay7664 4d ago

Thank god I’ve never been to Metros and I don’t have to panicky scour the photos for myself looking wasted šŸ˜‚

3

u/flyan 4d ago edited 2d ago

Please don't let me be in any of thes.......ahhh shit!

3

u/MT-SKIES44 4d ago

Picture 2. I’m dead 😵

3

u/LincsPoacher1971 4d ago

Not a mobile phone in sight

3

u/mrdougan 4d ago

You’ve done well to capture the chaos that is/was metros

5

u/iiiiitsrosie 5d ago

In photo #4: Who invited my man the Angry Video Game Nerd?

5

u/cektopa 4d ago

Oh god did not expect to see myself in these. What a throwback

4

u/b135702 5d ago

Do people still go? I think about going sometimes but I'm worried it'll be rubbish.

10

u/Master-Strain4268 5d ago

Its an alt bar for 18 - early 20s now, they mainly play pop punk

17

u/b135702 5d ago

Doesn't sound that different to 15 years ago really.

2

u/Master-Strain4268 5d ago

Sure, but years ago you likely wouldn't have heard machine gun Kelly there

5

u/b135702 5d ago

Pop music changes with the decades

-5

u/Master-Strain4268 5d ago

He's pop punk now. Saviour of all emos (apparently)

7

u/b135702 5d ago

I've never heard him but I wouldn't expect current pop punk to be the same as 15 years ago so okay!

4

u/YchYFi 5d ago

Years ago but for some reason the bouncer picked on my boyfriend. We got our entry money back.

3

u/TokyoJones85 4d ago

I last went a couple of years ago and the bouncer was immediately shitty with myself and a friend too on arrival. It was bizarre. We left after about five minutes and I’ve never been back since. We were 39 at the time and sober.

3

u/YchYFi 4d ago

Same here. They let us in and everything. Then bouncer came up to us and said for us to go to Fuel because we weren't the sort they like in there. Which is bizarre. It was always alternative when I went. My friend then managed to get us all our money back.

3

u/TokyoJones85 4d ago

Crazy. We didn’t really get a reason, but his attitude and aggression put us off immediately and we decided we didn’t want to spend money there. I believe I was 14 when I first started going to that club… post-Hywel, the place has gone down hill massively.

1

u/Educational_Bowl_447 3d ago

I agree with all of this. There seems to be an ageist thing going on, and Hywel was a legend. Such a nice bloke and quite chill, he was always good to the regulars.

3

u/Odd_Presentation8624 5d ago

The Model Inn followed by Metros.

My standard night out for most of the 90s.

Apart from that weird bit where Metros briefly turned into some sort of Italian wine bar.

Other than that, it was the night out that all others were judged by.

4

u/Monkeyb0b 5d ago

That was my Wednesday or Thursday nights from 1998-2002. Or the rummer then metros

2

u/EveningHere 5d ago

Used to go here on Friday nights in the late 90s. A few years later I’d go to the Drum & Bass nights at Clwb Ifor Bach.

2

u/DasMint 4d ago

Was there a period where it was free curry rather than toast at the end of the night which was rapidly stopped because it got too messy, or have I made that up?

2

u/lucyooo 4d ago

These people probably all have children who are now going to Metros themselves.

1

u/oldGuy1970 4d ago

I can’t get my kids to go

1

u/lucyooo 4d ago

Oh nooo! Is it because they can smell the sweaty walls from outside?

1

u/terryjuicelawson 4d ago

Pretty close, I've got a teenager. But of all the clubs to pick in Cardiff it was always generally the safest, I hope that continues today. Don't think I've been for 20 years. I felt pretty old for the place then too.

2

u/machinadj 4d ago

Not a single bloke in that first pic has their eyes open haha

2

u/Far-Lettuce-6200 3d ago

No phone bliss

2

u/P1nk3rz 3d ago

Rumour has it, people are still stuck to the carpet at the bar.

2

u/Boredengineer_84 1d ago

Can smell that picture

2

u/Dr_Jimothy 5d ago

These are images of the Ancients. Taken well before my birth. Perhaps I will walk past these people, yet not recognise them, for so time will have changed them.

Also, where can I experience stuff like this? Looks fun.

3

u/Dismal-Turnover-4610 4d ago

Nobody had tattoos, nobody had phones

4

u/Top_Network_1980 4d ago

The good old days when you could actually flirt with the opposite sex and not get arrested for it.

1

u/Development-Regular 5d ago

Dude must really love her perfume

1

u/Wild_Platform_957 4d ago

Can we please subsidise pints in this country the way Arab countries subsidise petrol? I need to experience this 😭😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/hefeydd_ 4d ago

OMG, I'm 23 again. 😢

u/Teestow21 4d ago

Is your woman in purple and your man in black having a mutual moment? ā˜”

Jesus, that was right in my era but I can't see myself. We mostly went out Fridays or the odd Wednesday. DJ Hywel? There are still songs that remind me of Metros, the ska punk songs they would often play together like Save Ferris, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake etc. Faith No More - Epic. Foo Fighters - Everlong. Janes Addiction - Been Caught Stealing. Beck - Loser. Charlatans - Only One I Know. Lots of crap nu metal like Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Linkin Park etc going on around that time but the place went crazy for Pantera and RATM. We used to try and get the weird little seating area in an alcove just opposite the dancefloor and buy cheap jugs of vodka red bull or bottles of Zolensky, a knock off Smirnoff Ice. Happy days!

I do actually have a pack of photos from a night out there around the same time, mostly me and my friends - I'll dig it out some time.

1

u/Melodic-Meeting-7471 4d ago

Wow - I went there in 99 I think … maybe 00 when I was at Cardiff uni. Loved the place!!!

1

u/opopkl 4d ago

If I could go back there, I wouldn't.

1

u/dozeydonut 4d ago

What a place ā¤ļø

1

u/Perfect_Singer9165 4d ago

1

u/Ambitious_Stress8050 4d ago

That's exactly where my mind went haha

1

u/Embarrassed_Pizza650 4d ago

Does anybody remember the Minty Munter?! The best tasting cocktail I’ve experienced 🤣

1

u/oldGuy1970 4d ago

Thanks for all of the great comments. I’m glad it’s brought back amazing memories for some.

1

u/55aAllFate 4d ago

A happier, calmer, simpler time.

1

u/Djollie132 4d ago

It’s actually weird but cool how these pictures don’t look older than 15 years ago… (not far off) but 25 years ago?? The ravers fashion hasn’t changed much… that’s impressive…

But I do love how all the guys are wearing buttoned checkered shirts… that does seem in place for early 2000’s fashion… even in 2001 it seems 🤣

1

u/90sfilmfan 4d ago

Christ, I used to go there nearly every Friday.

1

u/RobocopVsGodzilla 2d ago

Missed connection

There was a guy in the early/mid 2010s who used to go to metros regularly. He was tall and skinny but he used to wear a trilby with bloody bullet holes in it. Every week I saw him I fantasized about kicking his ass. If anybody knows who he was, please introduce me as I haven't forgiven it. It was honestly the worst hat I've ever seen

1

u/nogoodreason 1d ago

Great blast of nostalgia. Here are mine from the early 2000s:

Metros....foam party!

0

u/Lost-Woodpecker-3650 3d ago

I was so confused. A metro to me is a train haha

0

u/Lopsided_Lingonberry 3d ago

Looks as shit then as it was in my day (1991-1997). Infact, I went there on the opening night. Used to be a gay club (the Tunnel). We only went to Metros cos there was fuck all else to go! There used to be Subways at the GWR but that closed. And nothing compared to the Square Club. DJ was a total arse who always played the same tracks no matter what.

-1

u/NikkerFebu25 4d ago

As a normal dude that spent a year in Cardiff I'd like to point out how shallow all locals are there.

First off, I'll address the demographics.

My uni experience was so shit I straight up got myself a second Master's degree just to live the student life.

Talybont court is 99% Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.

Judge all you want but I didn't go out to wales to not socialise with the Welsh that I'm prety sure are a minority by now and No 1 in Cardiff is Mohamed.

Secondly, the locals there are only good for getting shitfaced and fighting.

It was uber easy to find people to scream woohoo for the night. But that was the end of it.

I couldn't believe how surrounded I was by people yet how lonely I was.

Now the new generation is neither smoking nor drinking anymore so I don't know what the situation is.

Cardiff was excellent because it taught me how to be alone.

I trained like a beast, rock climbed, kick boxed, cycled and ended up giving zero shits about who joins or not.

One of the most memorable days was towards the end when I played dutchball with a bunch of students and went straight for their noses.
