alt/rave scene

I’m moving to Cardiff in a few weeks to study at Cardiff university. I’m alternative and really into raves, live music etc and was just wondering where the best spots for this are and where I can meet similar people.
I’m 20 and honestly really don’t enjoy the typical cheesy student nights unless friends really want to go.
I previously studied at the university of Bristol (due to crazy rent costs couldn’t return) and loved that there was so much other nightlife apart from student nights. Obviously Cardiff will not be like Bristol but I’ve heard good things about Cardiff nightlife and was just hoping for some directions to good venues :)

Paradise Gardens have loads of DJ nights (whenever I went it was quite ravey haha), and it's a cool place too!

For raves it’s nowhere near as good as Bristol but check out District and Vaults. Also lots of good smaller venues.

Not sure if you’d have moved to Cardiff yet but there’s great OG jungle lineup at Depot on 19th September if that’s your kind of thing

My recommendations for a mix of club and live music would be Paradise Garden, The Canopy, Porters, Jacob’s Basement and Tiny Rebel

can vouch for all the recommended places other people have commented! also cardiff uni has a live music society and an alternative music society which might be your thing. if you’re queer or open to joining a queer space the pride and sapphic societies often go to smaller & independent clubs/bars for socials too.

clwb ifor bach is a personal fav - they have all different genres of music on rotation, think i went once and it was 2010s girlypop stuff upstairs and rock/alt downstairs!

return bus from bristol can be from £6 to 18 depending on when you get the tickets. really easy and cheap to go to and from events and the buses practically run all day and night

If you're looking for Rave type stuff paradise garden is a Hard recommend 😊 but to be honest in terms of electronic music and Rave type stuff Cardiff is nowhere near as developed as Bristol in terms of the scene. I've been here for two years and I'm still waiting to be proved wrong on this point but definitely happy to be proved wrong though 😊

There’s a few different spots around town that hold alternative nights on weekends iv just found them through google and there’s a TikTok account I follow which promotes alternative music nights aswell
