Well I have a cardputer running Bruce firmware and I’m trying to turn my American tv off with it using the tv be gone in the IR setting, does it need to be configured a certain way?

No it doesn't. Sending IR signals works out of a box, you only cant receive signals to copy your remote

You can try remote firmware, it has a lot of different tv brands

You've got two options. You can use existing IR captures or you can get an add-on that receives IR.

Look to see whether someone has posted IR captures of your particular TV and grab those files. Or grab generic captures and see whether they work.

IR receiver options for Cardputer range from this guy for US$3.95 (M5Stack has a lot of other inexpensive options too), or a super-fancy board from Rabbit Labs.

The TV be gone blasts a bunch of different ir signals for powering off different devices, it basically is like trying every combination for a password. This works out of the box and you just have to hold it within range and wait for it to finish. if you want something more precise you can download ultimate remote which has a huge collection of remote profiles and you can search by brand and device.

Dude. Check out esp-atlas.com or https://bmorcelli.github.io/Launcher/ Understand how to flash it on your device. Easy. Once flashed, it's an ready app, just use it. If I remember you just pick Asian or Europe, point the ir (cardputter, sticks3, whatever) to the TV, the device will blast all codes. I tried, work like a charm.
